Congress cites a 1937 resolution and freedom movement leaders to justify singing only the first two stanzas of Vande Mataram.
The Congress Working Committee has decided that only the first two stanzas of Vande Mataram would be sung at party meetings. This has led to a political controversy wherein BJP accused Congress of treating the National Song with contempt.Congress spokespersons have defended their decision on the basis of a resolution passed by the Congress in 1937. The Congress maintains that their decision was endorsed by some prominent freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Rabindranath Tagore.
Why Only the First Two Stanzas?
According to Congress, the first two stanzas of Vande Mataram refer to the magnificence, wealth, and soul of the motherland. This poem has been sung since long by all levels of the society and it has also been sung extensively at social functions. It has been feared that some other stanzas have some religious connotations. This is why the freedom fighters suggest that only the first two stanzas of this poem be sung.
Political Debate Intensifies
The problem has become prominent after the BJP leaders started criticizing the Congress about singing the full Vande Mataram at their events recently. While the BJP leaders have raised doubts about why the whole song is not being sung, the Congress leaders have defended their standpoint saying that they are not doing anything new politically.Once again, the National Song has become prominent amid the ongoing debates over its singing.
Historical Significance of Vande Mataram
The poem Vande Mataram was written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay and became one of the most inspiring songs of India’s independence movement. It was a source of inspiration for many freedom fighters.Although the first two stanzas are still accepted, the debate over later ones has been revived from time to time.
Conclusion
Singing the first two stanzas of the song “Vande Mataram” falls within the ambit of a resolution passed decades ago in the course of the freedom movement. With the political fallout in full swing, there is a growing curiosity about the background of the National Song of India.
