Former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar, serving a life sentence in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case, died at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital at 84.

Sajjan Kumar:As per officials of the hospital, Kumar was taken to Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) and Safdarjung Hospital by the policemen in a critical condition with an altered sensorium. He was admitted into the hospital and started receiving emergency care. As per an official statement from the hospital, despite all efforts made by the doctors, it was not possible to save Kumar who died at about 12:30 p.m.

A Controversial Political Career

Sajjan Kumar was among the prominent Congress politicians in Delhi and had represented the constituency of Outer Delhi many times in the Lok Sabha. In his political career, Sajjan Kumar became a prominent political leader within the Congress party and held considerable clout within the political circles of the national capital. Nevertheless, the political legacy of Sajjan Kumar continued to be shadowed by the allegations and legal cases that arose in connection with the riots of 1984 against the Sikhs, which took place after the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984.

Conviction in Anti-Sikh Riots Cases

For decades, victims and human rights groups have been working hard to obtain justice for those who were associated with the riots. There have been different commissions, inquiries, and trials which have been conducted so far to determine the involvement of political leaders and other individuals who were accused of being part of the riots. Sajjan Kumar was among those political leaders who had many charges against him in connection with the riots. After a number of years, Sajjan Kumar was found guilty of killing people in the riots against Sikhs in Delhi and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Hospital Statement

Kumar is said to have been taken into police custody and hospitalized immediately on his arrival there. Efforts were made by the medical teams to resuscitate him and give him complete treatment in an effort to save his life. However, the doctors failed in their efforts as Kumar succumbed to his illness. He died on Thursday around 12:30 p.m.

Reactions and Legacy

The news of Sajjan Kumar’s passing is anticipated to elicit reactions from politicians, lawyers, and members of the Sikh community. As while some may have viewed him as an experienced politician, others would be seeing his role and involvement in the context of the anti-Sikh violence in 1984 and subsequent legal action against him. His passing is the end of a political career which was intrinsically linked to one of the most controversial events in Indian history.
