Apple says a runner’s Apple Watch ECG showed signs of atrial fibrillation, leading to medical tests that uncovered a congenital heart condition requiring surgery.
Apple recently told the tale of Connor, an athlete who participates in a triathlon running event and claims that his Apple Watch device assisted in discovering a heart problem which was undetected earlier. During his training for the triathlon running race, Connor observed that there was a decline in his fitness levels, even when he kept exercising on a regular basis. In one particular competition, his heart rate was recorded to be close to 219 beats per minute. This raised red flags in his mind and he made use of the ECG function in his Apple Watch device.
Further Tests Revealed a Congenital Heart Condition
Following the visit to the doctor, Connor went for more medical tests. According to Apple, the tests showed that Connor was suffering from a heart condition that was congenital and he did not know of before. The condition eventually led to open heart surgery. Apple claims that Connor eventually recovered and he felt as though he had a “new heart.”Apple has made Connor’s story known through a recent video it released in a series of personal stories of the Apple Watch health features.
What Is the Apple Watch ECG Feature?
The ECG feature will detect the electrical signals produced by the heart and determine whether the signals could possibly indicate atrial fibrillation. An ECG performed by an Apple Watch is not a substitute for proper professional diagnosis, however. The ECG feature is available in all Apple Watches Series 4 or later, and in all Apple Watch Ultra devices. Apple Watch SE watches do not have ECG capabilities.
