GT Reject Hardik Pandya’s Return Over Captaincy Demand

Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya reportedly tried to swing his way back to the Gujarat Titans, but it all went a bit sideways, because the chats didn’t really land after he insisted on taking captaincy back, no room for debate so to speak. Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya was said to have checked out the idea of returning to Gujarat Titans ahead of an upcoming Indian Premier League, or IPL season, yet that change could not take place in the end. The reason given is that he made the captain role a non negotiable condition, even if everyone else seemed to prefer a different arrangement. As per reports, Gujarat Titans appeared willing to welcome their former skipper back. He was the person who steered the franchise to big results during its early period, and in those first two IPL campaigns, the outcome was genuinely remarkable. Pandya captained the team to the title in 2022, then in 2023 he once more guided them to the final, which basically locked in Gujarat Titans as one of the league’s most formidable outfits, in not much time at all.

Sources that were close to the whole discussion said the franchise actually looked seriously at the idea , and they even talked with the current captain Shubman Gill about whether Pandya could come back. Apparently, Gill didn’t have any real issue with the team making a trade arrangement , and he was open to the change if it really helps the squad. But then, negotiations reportedly kind of turned, when Pandya said that if he is to return to Gujarat Titans, then he should be reinstated as captain. That request , wasn’t taken onboard by the team management. Instead, they kept backing Gill and keeping him as the captain. One of the sources mentioned in reports said Gujarat Titans are fine with the concept of having Pandya return, yet they simply do not want to mess with their leadership setup. In other words, the franchise feels Gill is still key to their longer term plans, and they are committed to supporting him in the role. Pandya’s captaincy track record still looks strong. During his time with Gujarat Titans, he basically took a franchise that was still fresh and turned it into title- contenders almost right away. His success as captain lifted his standing a lot, and it later helped pave the way for his big move back to Mumbai Indians ahead of the 2024 season. That return to Mumbai Indians drew plenty of attention, especially after Pandya replaced Rohit Sharma as captain. Sure, fans reacted in mixed ways , but even with all that noise, Pandya has stayed one of the most impactful all-rounders in the IPL. For now, Gujarat Titans seem pretty set on continuing under Gill, and it pretty much puts an end to the talk about Pandya’s comeback. Unless things shift later, the franchise doesn’t look like it will re-open the proposal, especially if captaincy stays as a non negotiable condition for Pandya to return.
