New Delhi: Two crew members have been rescued after a Panama-flagged cargo ship sank in the Bay of Bengal off the Odisha coast, while search and rescue operations continue for the remaining crew members, Union Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said on Sunday.
The vessel, MV Ocean Winner, was carrying iron ore from Paradip Port in Odisha to China when it sank in the Bay of Bengal. There were 24 crew members on board, including 20 Chinese nationals, three from Myanmar and one from Bangladesh.
Two Survivors Rescued
According to Sonowal, two survivors were successfully rescued from separate liferafts. They are currently receiving medical treatment, while authorities are verifying their identities and ranks.
The minister said that all concerned agencies are working together to locate the remaining crew members. He also expressed concern for their safety as the search operation continues at sea.
The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre received information late on August 22 after communication with the vessel was lost. A request for search and rescue assistance was subsequently received from the vessel's associated company.
Following the distress alert, the rescue centre activated the International Safety Net and diverted MT AISOPOS to search for the missing vessel and its liferafts. The merchant ship later located and rescued two survivors at around 8 pm.
Indian Coast Guard Steps Up Search Operation
The Indian Coast Guard has deployed multiple vessels to support the rescue mission. ICGS Varad and ICGS Anmol were sent for the operation, while ICGS Vijit was also deployed from Sri Vijaya Puram to strengthen the search efforts.
Officials are continuing efforts to locate the other crew members. The exact circumstances that caused the bulk carrier to sink have not yet been officially established.
Ship Sank More Than 200 Nautical Miles Off Odisha
The vessel reportedly disappeared from the tracking system after leaving Paradip Port and later sank more than 200 nautical miles off the Odisha coast. According to vessel-tracking information cited by officials, MV Ocean Winner was a bulk carrier operating under the Panama flag. The ship was approximately 225 metres long and 32.26 metres wide.
The ongoing operation involves coordination among maritime authorities, the Indian Coast Guard and other agencies. Officials are focusing on locating the remaining crew members and bringing them to safety as quickly as possible.
