Tehran says a shipping agreement with Oman is nearing completion, but insists Washington must meet several conditions before the strategically important Strait of Hormuz is reopened.
Tehran, August 10, 2026: Iran has said that the reopening of the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz still hinges on the United States fulfilling a set of conditions, compensation being one of them , then lifting sanctions, and also a stop to military threats aimed at the country. These remarks arrive as tensions keep molding the geopolitical setting of West Asia, after months of fighting that has involved Iran, the United States, and Israel.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi said Tehran is, in the “final stages” of reaching a deal with Oman, to set up fresh shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz. The idea is supposed to help maritime navigation overall and it may turn into a real keystone step for bringing back safer commercial transit across one of the worlds most crucial energy corridors
However, Aragchi pointed out that having only a technical understanding with Oman, well it might not be enough, to basically reopen the waterway again. As Iranian officials say, the United States has to do a few political and economic things first. That would mean, paying compensation for the damages that happened during the recent military clashes, lifting the sanctions that were placed on Iran, and giving guarantees that Washington will not, try any future military action.
The Strait of Hormuz, found between Iran and Oman, is a key route for worldwide oil and natural gas shipments, it is one of those narrow corridors that matters a lot. A big slice of the world’s energy exports travels through that tight water passage, so if it gets blocked it becomes a serious worry for international markets and for the countries that depend on energy imports.
Iran blocked access through the strait after U.S. and Israeli military actions targeting Tehran, started in late February . After that, worries have been rising about interruptions to global energy deliveries, and also about regional security getting worse. Recently, a U.S. official said that talks between Iran and Oman seem to be moving along, and that they might eventually help bring back safe navigation in the area. Even with the diplomatic push ongoing, Iran has also made it clear it is not doing direct engagement with the United States right now. Aragchi said that any communication between the two sides is happening via intermediaries , and that Tehran will not step into direct discussions as long as Washington keeps violating the interim agreement signed in June. Overall, the whole thing is still being tracked closely by governments and by energy markets everywhere, because any real breakthrough could reshape global commerce, influence oil prices, and shift regional stability.
