India strengthen their position in the second Test as Sri Lanka pick up six wickets in Colombo

India vs Sri Lanka: India carried forward their impressive run rate in the second Test match against Sri Lanka to post a score of 419/6 at Lunch on Day 2 of the match at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC), Colombo. India who are definite favorites going into the match as they have already won the first Test match in Galle with a point and therefore the series by 1-0 are set to sweep the series clean. Sri Lanka made some very crucial breakthroughs in the morning session as Ashita Fernando dismissed Saransh Jain of India. India Chooses to Bat First. Indian team captain Shubman Gill won the toss and chose to bat first in Colombo. After a very good show in the first Test match in Galle, India came into the second Test with confidence and the chance of sweeping the series.

Ashita Fernando Leads Sri Lanka’s Attack

Ashita Fernando was one of the best bowlers that Sri Lanka had in their disposal in the first session on the second day. Dismissing of Saransh Jain by Ashita Fernando was yet another breakthrough for the hosts as India had lost six wickets at that point. With Fernando nearing her fifth wicket, Sri Lanka needs to stop India scoring a massive first-innings total.

SSC Pitch Offers a Balanced Contest

The playing surface at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo traditionally provides chances for both batsmen and bowlers.  Although the pitch favors disciplined batting, bowlers can also take advantage of the changing pitch conditions during the course of the game. India choosing to bat first is indicative of how vital it is to post a sizable first innings total and to put pressure on Sri Lanka once they get going.

Series and WTC Stakes

India came into the Test with an advantage of 1-0 after having won in Galle. A win for the visitors in Colombo will mean they will go unbeaten for the Tests and will improve their status in the World Test Championship round. The game is equally crucial for Sri Lanka. The hosts are determined to make the series even in their home ground and prevent the Indians from winning the Tests 2-0. Sri Lanka have had to face the challenge of missing their vital batters Dinesh Chandimal and Pathum Nissanka, who are unavailable due to injury.

India Aim to Maintain Control

On Day 2 during Lunch, India still hold the upper hand at 419/6. For Sri Lanka to restrict the visitors from posting an even higher score, they will require early wickets after Lunch. Considering the fact that India are in search of winning the series and staying alive in the WTC table, the upcoming Test is set for another showdown.
