For Gurumaa Yogita Khatri, wellness is not something that begins when illness appears. It begins much earlier, through everyday food choices, movement, sleep, thoughts, emotional balance and a closer relationship with nature. With more than 27 years of experience as a Yoga and Naturopathy professional, motivational speaker, healer and wellness practitioner, Gurumaa has spent her career encouraging people to take greater responsibility for their health. She is the founder of Nirvana Naturopathy & Retreat in Igatpuri, Nashik, founded in 2014, where her work brings together naturopathy, yoga, nutrition, lifestyle correction and mindful living.

Her medicine free health mission grew from watching people live with lifestyle related illnesses for years while depending heavily on medicines. Gurumaa began to question whether treating symptoms alone was enough. She came to believe that the body has a natural ability to heal when given the right environment and care. This belief led her towards a form of wellness centred on food, movement, nature, positive thinking and the five elements.

“My mission is not against modern medicine. It is about helping people discover that prevention, natural living, and self healing can reduce unnecessary dependence on medicines and lead to lifelong wellness,” she says.

When Gurumaa started her journey, her purpose was mainly to help people recover from illness naturally. Over the years, that purpose became much larger. She wanted people to understand that healthcare should begin before disease. For her, preventive healthcare means awareness, mindful eating, physical activity, emotional balance, proper rest and conscious living. She dreams of an India where families understand how to protect their health before they need treatment.

This thinking has shaped Nirvana Naturopathy & Retreat. Gurumaa does not believe wellness should be limited to a temporary programme. Each person has a different body, lifestyle and health history, so their journey towards better health needs personal attention. Naturopathy, yoga, therapeutic nutrition, hydrotherapy, breathing practices, rest, meditation and time in nature form part of the work carried out at Nirvana. Her intention is that people should not become dependent on the centre. They should return home with knowledge and habits that they can continue on their own.

She also questions the belief that medicines alone create health. Gurumaa is careful to acknowledge that modern medicine has an important place in emergencies, surgery, infections and critical care. Her concern is with the idea that a tablet can compensate for an unhealthy lifestyle. Food, sleep, stress, movement and daily habits continue to influence a person's well being. In her words, “Your lifestyle is your first prescription.”

Healthy habits, she says, often fail because people try to change everything at once. Busy schedules, stress, irregular sleep, processed foods and excessive screen time can make healthy choices difficult. Gurumaa believes people need simple routines that can become part of normal life. Drinking enough water, eating fresh and seasonal food, walking, practising yoga, sleeping on time, managing stress and spending time outdoors are some of the habits she encourages. Prevention, for her, is not about perfection. It is about consistency.

Mindset has an equally important place in her work. Gurumaa believes thoughts and emotions influence the choices people make and the way they respond to difficult periods. Fear, anger and hopelessness can make healthy living harder, while gratitude, hope, discipline and calmness can help people make better choices. At Nirvana, yoga, meditation and mindful breathing are used alongside other wellness practices to help people reconnect with themselves.

Among the many people she has met over the years, Gurumaa says the transformation that stays with her is not connected to one particular diagnosis. It is the moment when someone who has lost hope begins believing in their ability to care for themselves again. She recalls guests arriving exhausted by years of stress, poor sleep, obesity, diabetes, hypertension and digestive concerns. One guest in particular arrived physically weak and emotionally defeated, then gradually changed through natural nutrition, yoga, rest, therapies and a more positive mindset. When that person returned months later, they were no longer simply seeking help. They were encouraging others to live better.

Her message also reaches entrepreneurs. Gurumaa has seen business owners build wealth while neglecting their own health through long working hours, stress and poor sleep. She believes entrepreneurs should schedule exercise, good nutrition, hydration, rest and quiet time with the same discipline they give to business meetings. A company can recover from financial setbacks, she says, but years of neglecting the body can be much harder to repair.

Gurumaa also believes health should become a family culture. Families can eat together, walk together, practise yoga, reduce screen time and spend more time outdoors. Children learn strongly from what their parents do, not only from what they are told. For her, the greatest inheritance parents can give their children is a set of healthy habits.

Her work has grown far beyond the walls of Nirvana. Through naturopathy awareness and social wellness programmes, she has reached approximately six lakh people, while around 4.5 lakh people have benefited from free healthcare and wellness activities. Her social work includes rural health, women’s empowerment, youth development, digital education and community welfare. Nirvana has also created more than 200 local employment and livelihood opportunities for people from villages around Igatpuri. With a team of around 250 employees, the centre has become a source of livelihood for local families, including people with limited formal education.

Her concern for community wellbeing also extends to animals and nature through Nirvana's Gaushala initiative. Gurumaa sees compassionate treatment of animals and respect for nature as part of a healthy way of living. Her work therefore connects preventive healthcare with rural livelihoods, women and community empowerment, animal welfare and responsible living.

For more than a decade, she has conducted motivational programmes for students and young people through Allen Career Institute and other educational platforms. In 2017, she was invited by Shri Jairam Thakur, then Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, in connection with the International Day of Yoga. She is a member of the Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy under the Ministry of AYUSH and holds a doctorate degree. Her recognitions include a Best Motivational Speaker award, along with several media features.

Gurumaa welcomes people who question natural healing. She believes skepticism can lead to better conversations when people ask questions and seek evidence. She does not ask anyone to reject modern medical care or blindly accept natural therapies. Her preference is for people to understand where different forms of care have their place and to make informed decisions about their health.

She would like India's healthcare system to give prevention greater attention. Schools, workplaces and families, in her view, should teach people about nutrition, physical activity, yoga, stress management and healthy routines from an early age. She sees the future of healthcare as one where modern medicine and traditional wellness practices can exist alongside each other, with proper medical care available when needed and preventive habits becoming part of everyday life.

Over the next decade, Gurumaa expects more people to ask not only how illness can be treated, but how health can be protected before illness begins. She hopes nutrition, sleep, movement, yoga, stress management and mindful living become ordinary parts of family life.

Her advice to future wellness leaders is simple. Serve before seeking success. Keep learning, respect science as well as India's traditional knowledge, lead through your own lifestyle and never put personal recognition before the wellbeing of the people who trust you. She believes a good wellness leader should help people become independent rather than dependent.

The legacy Gurumaa wants to leave is not about buildings, awards or personal recognition. It is about healthier families, more aware young people, stronger rural communities and a culture in which prevention becomes part of daily life. “I don't want to be remembered only for building a wellness centre. I want to be remembered for inspiring a way of life.”

That purpose continues through Nirvana Naturopathy & Retreat and through the many people who have encountered her message over the past 27 years. For Gurumaa, wellness is not a short programme or a treatment reserved for difficult times. It is a daily choice to care for the body, calm the mind, respect nature, serve the community and live with greater awareness.
