The Left Front organized demonstrations at nearly 20 locations across Tripura, accusing the BJP-led government of divisive politics

Agartala, August 10, 2026:On Monday the Left Front in Tripura rolled out a statewide “Jail Bharo” agitation at nearly 20 places, and yeah it feels like it ramped up its push against the BJP-led state government. They organised the protest to press for 11 demands tied to livelihood, work opportunities, rural development, and the rights of marginalized communities those sections of society that usually get sidelined.

The stir was led by former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar along with Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, they both went after the government saying it had not managed to handle the worsening economic situation common folks are dealing with. When Sarkar spoke to the protesters, he alleged that even after repeated requests from opposition parties and public organisations, the government still did not take meaningful steps to settle problems like unemployment, rising prices, and the everyday struggle around earning a decent living. He said instead of prioritizing welfare measures, the BJP administration was leaning into a “politics of division”, creating small but sharp differences among communities. Sarkar also took aim at how the state has been managing the civil disobedience programme. He claimed that police and administrative machinery were being used to hinder democratic protests. In his view, the government should have tried to talk with demonstrators, through dialogue and discussion, rather than trying to block the agitation outright.

Chaudhury further accused several government departments of corruption, and mismanagement—saying the whole administration is basically running under what he called a “regime of loot” type thing. He also mentioned that the purpose behind the ‘Jail Bharo’ movement was to shoot out a clear political signal, and force the government to finally deal with urgent matters that hit ordinary citizens. Meanwhile, Left Front leaders claimed the protest happened at nearly 20 places across Tripura at the same time. They said this was meant to widen the opposition’s reach beyond Agartala, and push stronger grassroots mobilization too. Party leaders added that the agitation would keep going, if the government doesn’t respond to their demands properly. As of now , the BJP government has not put out any full detailed response to the allegations raised during the protest. Still, the statewide stir can be seen as a renewed attempt by the Left Front to take on the ruling party ahead of the coming political contests in the state.
