Kejriwal's E20 Protest March Stopped Near PM Residence
Arvind Kejriwal, who is former Chief Minister of Delhi and also national convener of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), led a protest march towards the Prime Minister’s residence over the issue of E20 fuel policy on Tuesday. But the Delhi Police did not allow Arvind Kejriwal and other AAP leaders such as Manish Sisodia and Jasmine Shah to proceed any further beyond Feroz Shah Road.
In response to this, Arvind Kejriwal along with other AAP leaders sat in protest in the road alleging that the Centre was not listening to their demands regarding the E20 fuel policy.
Petitions numbering 2.3 lakh collected by AAP
According to AAP, it has been able to collect more than 2.30 lakh signed petitions from the citizens of the country against the policy on E20 fuel. As per the party, these petitions were supposed to be delivered personally to the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi.
In an address to his supporters at the demonstration, Kejriwal said that over two lakh citizens have written letters to the Prime Minister regarding their grievances with the policy. He further informed that he had sent a request for meeting with the Prime Minister.
E20 Fuel Policy Criticized by Kejriwal
While protesting, Kejriwal accused the Centre of implementing the E20 fuel policy under pressure from the US government. According to him, the policy would affect the lives of millions of motorists and appealed to the people to be part of the larger movement in comparison to the agitation of NEET issue.
It has been argued that the consumers should be given an option to decide whether they want to use normal petrol or E20 fuel and also the prices of E20 fuel should be reduced.
AAP appeals for PMO’s help
The Delhi AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj stated that the only intention of his party members was to file the memorandum and they just wanted to question the huge presence of policemen on their way.
He appealed to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to send someone from the office to accept the memorandum, if there is some issue of security regarding going to Prime Minister's house.
According to him, the purpose of the party was to convey their grievances regarding the E20 policy to the government authorities.
PM failed to reply back
It is alleged that Kejriwal had written a letter to the Prime Minister last month requesting time for discussing his grievances over E20 petrol but no response was received from the PM.
This led to the planning of the march to handover the citizens’ signed petitions to the PM.
Criticism from the BJP on the demonstration
BJP leaders were very critical of the demonstration, claiming that the activities were nothing but the politics of anarchy initiated by Kejriwal. The BJP president of Delhi, Harsh Malhotra, accused the march of not having been sanctioned and being politically confrontational.
According to Malhotra, Kejriwal was trying to show himself to be a victim by getting stopped by the police.
Political debate over E20 intensifies
The protest has added fresh momentum to the political debate surrounding the E20 fuel policy. While AAP continues to demand greater public consultation and consumer choice, the BJP has dismissed the protest as politically motivated. The issue is likely to remain a key point of confrontation between the two parties in the coming weeks.
