Political moves by Babush Monserrate and Babu Ajgaonkar have reignited questions over the BJP's ability to maintain discipline among its influential regional leaders in Goa.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) , which many people see as one of India’s most disciplined political organizations, is now getting renewed scrutiny in Goa. This is because a few recent developments, tied to senior figures Atanasio "Babush" Monserrate and former Deputy Chief Minister Manohar "Babu" Ajgaonkar, are leading to talk about whether their internal cohesion is really intact, and how tight the leadership control is. In the middle of all this, the political conversation is slowly turning towards who is steering what, and how smoothly things are being coordinated.
The latest controversy kind of hinges on Revenue Minister Babush Monserrate’s decision to renovate and reactivate his older office premises, in the Santa Cruz constituency. That choice has, honestly, sparked a lot of conjecture about what he may be aiming for politically before the 2027 Goa Assembly elections. Even though Monserrate has insisted that the place is simply a private office, the whole development has also kicked off fresh arguments inside local BJP circles, especially after some concerns were voiced about parallel political structures slowly showing up within the constituency.
The issue gained further attention following a public exchange between Monserrate and Santa Cruz MLA Rudolf Fernandes regarding the office's significance. Political observers think this whole episode shows how the clout of powerful regional leaders keeps growing, these people usually have strong grassroots backing, and they manage to work with a fairly large degree of independence inside the party framework. Meanwhile, former Deputy Chief Minister Babu Ajgaonkar has once more turned into a thing people talk about in Goa, kinda everywhere. Ajgaonkar’s own political path, it’s had a lot of pivots across the years. He’s been with Congress, then later BJP, and at other moments also with the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party, MGP, before he came back to the BJP in 2019. Analysts say Goa’s political scene feels different than many other places, largely because individual leaders have heavy pull, plus constituency-level ties that matter a lot. While the BJP has grown its reach in the state through alliances and carefully timed inductions, there’s always that extra balancing act: organizational order on one side, and on the other side the goals of influential local figures, it’s still not fully settled and remains tricky. Babush Monserrate’s continued electoral clout adds even more weight to that point. His BJP-supported panel, after all, managed a broad win in the local elections earlier this year, and it again reinforced him as one of the most powerful political operators in Goa. Those wins don’t just look good on paper, they also boost his bargaining strength inside the party, and they show how regional leaders still shape the way electoral politics works day to day. And with the 2027 Assembly elections still not around the corner, the BJP leadership is expected to kind of huddle and concentrate on keeping the party together, plus stopping any factional frictions from getting much bigger. Even so the back-and-forth around Babush and Babu, it’s again underlined that delicate line in Goa between strict party rules and political pragmatism. In this continuously changing political landscape there is always that balancing act, you know, where every small move matters, or so it seems.
