Sonam Wangchuk on Dharmendra Pradhan’s Resignation: “Otherwise It Won’t Mean Anything”
New Delhi: Activist Sonam Wangchuk has stated that the resignation of former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan must be viewed as just the first step towards reforms and not as the ultimate solution. Speaking to the press after being discharged from hospital, Wangchuk pointed out that there need to be necessary reforms in the educational system, otherwise, the resignation will not have any meaning.
These remarks came after Wangchuk went to visit Rajghat in New Delhi along with his wife Geetanjali Angmo. Wangchuk had recently concluded his long-running hunger strike due to the alleged leakage of NEET papers and the need for reforms in the entire examination system.
"Resignation is Just the Starting Point"
Asked to comment on Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation, Wangchuk expressed his hope for some real reform to take place in the system.
He noted that resigning will not help unless there is an implementation of action. As far as he is concerned, apologizing for making a mistake is just the starting point while the actual aim should be working towards reform of the country’s education and examination systems.
Wangchuk was hopeful that if appropriate reforms are carried out, India can establish a better education system.
Helps in Discussion on the Examination Reform Bill
Welcoming the amendment that aims to improve the existing law against paper leaks, Wangchuk emphasized that it is essential to discuss any kind of bill which helps to improve the quality of the examination process.
According to him, the reforms must come after proper discussion. He requested that the people and students who are protesting in a peaceful way should not be punished.
Introduction of Anti-Paper Leak Bill in Lok Sabha
While making the above-mentioned statement, Wangchuk made the statement at a time when the Central Government had brought the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026 in the Lok Sabha.
This bill was aimed at ensuring stringent laws for curbing malpractices like paper leak in the examinations. This bill was introduced amid protests by the opposition members regarding the police action taken against the student protesters.
The government justified this bill in terms of ensuring more transparency in public examinations.
Hunger Strike Ends after Government Promise
Sonam Wangchuk was fasting in Delhi's Jantar Mantar since June 28 because of the issue of NEET paper leak and education reforms.
He ended his fast after getting written assurances from the government after nearly four weeks. His fast ended under the watchful eyes of senior Union ministers in a hospital where he had been admitted for treatment.
After getting discharged from the hospital, Wangchuk said reforms should still remain a priority for the government.
Takes Resignation to Be a Triumph for Democracy
Before that, Wangchuk said that the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan is "a victory for democracy". In a post on social media, he congratulated the students and citizens for participating in the movement and thanked them for speaking out peacefully.
There have been protests all across the country demanding accountability in the system of examinations. Demonstrations took place in Delhi and many other cities.
Although the resignation has pleased many protestors, according to Wangchuk, it will only be a success if India's education system improves.
