Kangana Ranaut Clarifies 'Gutter Generation' Remark
New Delhi: Actress and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut has once again found herself at the centre of a political controversy after her remarks about Generation Z (Gen Z) sparked widespread criticism. Following backlash from opposition leaders and social media users, the Mandi MP released a video clarifying that her comments were aimed at what she described as "obscene behaviour" displayed by some protesters and not at an entire generation.
The controversy began after Kangana criticised videos and reels shared during student protests over the alleged NEET paper leak issue. Referring to the language and behaviour seen in some viral clips, she used the term "Gutter Generation," triggering sharp reactions across the political spectrum.
What Kangana Ranaut Had Said
While reacting to videos from the protests, Kangana questioned the conduct of some young protesters and expressed concern over what she called a decline in values and public behaviour.
She alleged that certain viral videos promoted abusive language and indecent conduct, adding that such behaviour did not reflect India's culture and traditions. She also criticised the influence of Western culture on a section of youth and claimed that some social media content was normalising behaviour she considered inappropriate.
Her remarks quickly went viral, leading to criticism from opposition parties and several public figures.
Kangana Issues Clarification
In a video shared on social media, Kangana said her statement had been misrepresented.
According to the BJP MP, her criticism was directed only at individuals displaying inappropriate and obscene behaviour in public, and not at the entire Gen Z community.
She also said that many members of her own family and professional team belong to Gen Z and that she has appreciation for young people who work hard and contribute positively to society.
Kangana accused sections of the media of highlighting only controversial portions of her remarks while ignoring the praise she had expressed for Indian startups and students preparing for competitive examinations.
Remarks on PM Narendra Modi
During her clarification, Kangana also referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that public figures deserve basic respect regardless of political differences.
She stated that many students consider PM Modi an inspiration through initiatives related to examinations, while others view him as a national leader or even as a family figure. According to Kangana, criticism is acceptable in a democracy, but personal insults or abusive language should not become acceptable in public discourse.
She urged young people to maintain dignity while expressing their opinions and said that freedom of expression should be exercised responsibly.
Previous Controversies
This is not the first time Kangana Ranaut has been involved in public controversies. Over the years, she has faced criticism for her remarks on the farmers' protest, CAA protests, Bollywood and several political issues.
Some of her previous statements also drew legal challenges and political reactions. In certain instances, the BJP had publicly stated that her personal opinions did not reflect the party's official position.

Opposition leaders criticised Kangana's latest remarks, alleging that her comments were insensitive towards the younger generation. Congress leaders and student representatives questioned her statements and demanded greater responsibility from elected representatives.
On the other hand, Kangana has maintained that her intention was to speak against indecent behaviour and not to target an entire generation.
