Deadly blaze erupts at Kolkata hotel; 15 people rescued in overnight operation
Kolkata Hotel Fire:Tragedy struck the city of Kolkata on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, early in the morning when a huge fire broke out in one of the hotels in the city, which left nine people dead and six people injured. According to the officials from the Kolkata Police, the deaths occurred because of suffocation due to thick smoke spreading in the building very quickly.
Fire is said to have broken out at about 2 a.m., while everyone was sleeping. Flames and smoke caused chaos among the people who were staying at the hotel. An immediate call for help was made, which resulted in quick action by the firefighters and other concerned departments. Fire engines were immediately dispatched to control the fire and save those trapped inside the building.
An intense rescue mission was initiated which lasted for several hours. It has been reported that at least 15 people have been rescued from the hotel during the rescue mission. The rescue team utilized the help of ladders and safety equipment in order to save the guests who were trapped inside the building due to dense smoke.The six injured persons have been shifted to the nearest hospital where they are currently under treatment. Information regarding their conditions has not been released yet by the authorities.
It is believed that according to initial findings, a major part of the casualties suffered from suffocation as compared to burns. Spread of smoke throughout the corridors and rooms of the hotel created hindrances in the escape of some of its occupants. Investigation is being carried out in order to find out the real cause of the fire.The latest incident has once again brought into focus issues of fire safety standards of hotels and commercial properties.
