JP Nadda’s ‘Emergency’ Remark Triggers Row Over Attempted Arrest of CPM Leader Aishe Ghosh
A political controversy sort of flared up in Parliament after Union Minister and Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha, JP Nadda, defended what Delhi Police tried to do, meaning they wanted to detain CPM leader and former JNU Students’ Union president Aishe Ghosh from the CPI(M) headquarters in New Delhi. This incident then turned into pretty sharp , back and forth exchanges between the ruling BJP and Opposition parties with Nadda bringing up the Emergency era as a way to push back against criticism coming from opposition leaders The trouble really started when a Delhi Police team went to AKG Bhavan, the national headquarters of the CPI(M) reportedly trying to take Aishe Ghosh into custody in relation to a case tied to a 2021 protest. CPM leaders claimed police personnel entered the party office without proper prior notice, they framed the action as a kind of intimidate move aimed at political activists and to stifle dissent .
Raising the issue in the Rajya Sabha, CPM MP John Brittas said that the police were targeting Ghosh , because of her involvement in student protests and he also questioned how exactly officers entered a national political party’s office, like why it was done that way, matter just so. Congress president and Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge meanwhile criticised the incident and asked for accountability from those who were behind the operation. When asked about the allegations, JP Nadda called the police action a “normal law and order situation”, and he also rejected the claims saying it was politically driven. Nadda then brought up a comparison with the Emergency of 1975, and he said that he too had been arrested a number of times as a student activist under the Congress regime. He further argued that student activists are often subjected to legal proceedings when they are part of protests, and accused the Opposition of turning the whole thing into sensation, basically for political ends.
The Opposition, however, maintained that the attempted detention of Ghosh from inside a political party office raised serious questions about democratic norms and the functioning of law enforcement agencies. The exchange led to heated scenes in the Upper House, with members from both sides engaging in a war of words over the issue.
The episode has since become a major political flashpoint, with both the BJP and Opposition parties using it to reinforce their respective narratives on democracy, dissent, and the role of law enforcement. As the debate continues, the incident is expected to remain a contentious issue in the ongoing Parliament session.
