JLKM leader says agitation will continue until the government ensures corruption-free recruitment exams and prevents future paper leaks.
Devendra Mahto Announces Phase 2: Devendra Nath Mahto, head of the Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JLKM), has stated that the second phase of the students’ agitation will be initiated, even though the state government decided to cancel the contentious JSSC-CGL examination. According to him, the agitation will not stop until the government promises free from corruption recruitment examinations in the future. The move has been made just one day after the government of Jharkhand canceled the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level (JSSC-CGL) exam on account of alleged irregularities. Nath Mahto, who had completed a hunger strike lasting 16 days, claimed that the move was a great victory for the students; however, their struggle is still going on.
Demand for Corruption-Free Recruitment
Commenting on the move taken by the government, Mahto stated that the students are demanding comprehensive reforms in the recruiting process carried out by Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC).As per his statements, the agitation would go on until the officials make sure that there won't be any paper leaks, tampering or any other kind of foul play in future exams. The students have been complaining that the exams in the state were always marred by secrecy.
Students Continue to Push for CBI Probe
Although appreciating the scrapping of the JSSC-CGL test, a faction among the protesting students is persisting in its demand for an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) regarding the examination irregularities. The students believe that scrapping the test is not enough but that there must be an investigation conducted in order to hold those responsible accountable and restore confidence in the recruitment process.
Successful Candidates Also Protest
The decision by the government has also sparked protests among those candidates who have qualified through the JSSC-CGL exam and managed to land themselves government jobs. They feel threatened because cancellation of the examination might jeopardize their jobs. Although they support the investigation of the matter, they demand the chance to defend themselves. Interestingly, both protesting students and successful candidates are demanding an investigation by the CBI, although their worries are different when it comes to the repercussions of the exam cancellation.
Hemant Soren Government Announces Reforms
Cancellation of JSSC-CGL exam due to continuous protests by the students for over three weeks was declared by Hemant Soren, who is the Chief Minister of Jharkhand. The Chief Minister further disclosed that a committee under the chairmanship of Amitabh Kaushal, an IAS officer, will be set up to bring changes in the examination system of the state.
Minister Calls Decision ‘Historic’
Shilpi Neha Tirkey, minister of Jharkhand, described this initiative by the government as a momentous step. According to her, the government was attentive to the problems of the students and acted justly.Tirkey also stressed that the government stands for a fair inquiry into the case and is ready to increase the trust of the people in constitutional bodies and recruitment agencies.
What Lies Ahead?
With Devendra Mahto planning the second phase of the agitation, it seems that the recruitment dispute in Jharkhand is not going to die out in the near future. The students are concentrating on the implementation of reforms in the process, whereas those who won the exams require safeguarding their careers. The next few weeks will be crucial since the state government will have to make some amendments to examinations and respond to the demand for the CBI investigation. Will it be enough for everyone involved? The problem has already become one of the major student movements in Jharkhand.
