Iran Rial Crisis Deepens as Dollar Crosses 2 Million Rials

The Iranian rial has fallen to a historic low, with one US dollar costing more than 2 million rials on Iran's free market. The sharp decline has added to the economic pressure facing millions of Iranians, as food, medicines, clothing and other basic necessities continue to become more expensive. The currency crisis comes amid years of international sanctions on Iran and worsening economic conditions following the US-Israel war on Iran. Rising inflation and disruptions to trade have further reduced the purchasing power of ordinary households.

Basic Goods Become Increasingly Expensive

The fall in the rial has had a direct impact on the cost of everyday products. Before the war, 2 million rials could purchase approximately 4kg of tomatoes, half a kilogram of chicken and nearly a litre of cooking oil. That amount now buys significantly less. The average price of tomatoes has increased by around 71 percent, while chicken prices have risen by 74 percent. Cooking oil has seen an even sharper increase, with prices climbing by approximately 177 percentMedicine prices have also surged. Insulin, which is essential for people with diabetes, has reportedly increased by 642 percent. Paracetamol has become about 93 percent more expensive, while baby formula has risen by approximately 95 percent despite government subsidies. The sharp increase in essential costs is forcing families to reconsider their spending and reduce purchases that were previously considered normal parts of household life.

Families Struggle to Keep Up With Rising Costs

Iran's currency hits a record low as sanctions, war damage and rising prices put pressure on households and businesses. For most Iranian families, the financial crisis has made a difference in their priorities; they have become more concerned about paying for basic needs like food, childcare and other costs instead of thinking about major investments and future. A resident of Tehran named Afsaneh stated that she works along with her husband and takes care of their one-year-old baby but rising cost of childcare has caused extra burden on their financial resources. According to her, purchasing of new clothes and the replacement of the car have become out of reach for the family as they concentrate on surviving every month. The most common method used in Iran to calculate their money is toman along with rial which is their official monetary unit. One toman is equivalent to 10 rials.

Businesses and Workers Face Growing Pressure

This currency crisis has also hit Iranian business owners. While damage caused by the ongoing crisis has led to production issues, import-export challenges have further exacerbated the problem. However, the wages have not managed to keep up with the pace at which prices have increased. The minimum wage approved by the government for the current Iranian calendar year is said to be at 166 million rials, with assistance being around 220 million rials. Also, retail businesses have suffered due to this currency crisis. A Tehran-based retailer selling men's fashion products reported an estimated 40 percent reduction in sales in comparison to the last year. He stated that increasing wages, high raw material prices, and overheads make it very tough for the business to survive. Moreover, he warned that retailers might see an even greater challenge due to increasing costs in the coming months.

Economic Crisis Escalates

With the ongoing depreciation of the rial, the cost of living is becoming more challenging for average Iranians. In addition to the volatile nature of prices, families find it difficult to budget, and firms are dealing with shrinking revenues and increasing costs. While sanctions, economic limitations, warfare and inflation have been putting pressure on the Iranian economy, the recent currency crisis demonstrates the financial challenges the country’s citizens are experiencing.
