Bureau of Immigration Introduces New Process
The foreign travelers that will be departing from Indian airports after September 1 will no longer have their boarding passes stamped, according to a new guideline issued by the Bureau of Immigration (BoI), an organization which is part of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
E-Boarding Passes to Be Accepted
The updated procedure requires passengers traveling overseas to only show the electronic boarding pass through their smartphone during the process of immigration. This implies that passengers will not have to go through the procedure of getting stamped on their boarding passes before proceeding to the departure area. Officials said this move was in response to the increasing use of digital documents by travelers.
Physical Boarding Passes Still Valid
Whereas the use of digital boarding passes would be encouraged, those travelers who still have their printed boarding passes would be allowed to go through the immigration process.Still, starting September 1, immigration officers would no longer place stamps on boarding passes. The paper would still be valid for traveling, though the process of stamping it is going to be abolished totally.
Why the Rule Has Been Changed
The following was said by those who work there that the Bureau of Immigration analyzed the current situation and concluded that mandatory stamping of boarding passes resulted in delays and long queues at immigration checkpoints. The new procedure will help to make the process more efficient for travelers and, especially, those departing from international airports on a daily basis in large numbers.
Important for International Flyers
Travelers flying abroad from India from September 1 need to make sure that their mobile phones have sufficient charge and their electronic boarding passes are easily available during the immigration process. Those travelers who prefer using printed boarding passes will still be allowed to do so but will not expect the immigration department to stamp the boarding pass. The recent instruction represents yet another step in the process of digitization in airports and the immigration process in India.
