Eid-e-Milad 2026: Significance, History and Celebrations
Eid Milad 2026 is celebrated today, August 26, by many Muslims in India. The name of the event is known as Eid-e-Milad, Milad-un-Nabi, Mawlid or Mawlid an-Nabi, and is believed to be related to the birth of Prophet Muhammad. The day comes in the month of Rabi-ul-Awwal of Islam. Eid Milad 2026 is usually celebrated with prayers, Quran reading, religious congregations, poetry on the life of Prophet Muhammad and other similar activities.
Why Do People Celebrate Eid-e-Milad?
This religious festival is celebrated by most Muslims in order to commemorate the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad. According to the Islamic religion, Prophet Muhammad is considered to be the last prophet. The teachings of Prophet Muhammad include qualities like mercy, justice, kindness, forgiveness, fraternity and compassion for humans. Eid-e-Milad History
According to history, the birth of Prophet Muhammad took place somewhere around 570 CE in Mecca. However, it was a later custom that was practiced not during his lifetime but in subsequent centuries. Gradually, practices of Mawlid celebration spread to various parts of the Muslim world. Different regions came up with their own practices of celebrating this event. In South Asia, the practice turned out to be part of religious events, poetic gatherings, public processions, and other community practices.
How Is Eid-e-Milad Observed?
On the day of Eid-e-Milad, there are various ways of commemorating the event by most Muslims. This involves performing special prayers along with religious congregations where passages from the Quran are read and scholars speak on the life and character of Prophet Muhammad. Another common way of celebrating the day includes naats, which are devotional poems that glorify the Prophet Muhammad. While some regions may have processions in celebration, some may prefer prayer and religious reflection on this day. Many people choose to dress up and meet with members of their families and communities. Being of help to those in need forms another important way of celebrating the day by many people.

How Many Eids Does Islam Have?
There are two main Eids in the Islamic calendar, namely Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha. While Eid-ul-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, Eid-ul-Adha takes place on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah in the Islamic pilgrimage month. On the other hand, Eid-e-Milad is distinct from the two main Eids because it is an important festival in many Muslim communities around the world, especially as a commemoration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad and his teachings. The Eid-e-Milad 2026 is thus being marked by Muslims living in various regions in India through prayers, religious programs, community events and charitable works among others.
