Priyank Kharge’s remarks on PM Modi’s bhajan event triggered a sharp response from the BJP.
Bhajan Clubbing: has emerged as a political issue after Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended a religious performance at a place in New Delhi, with Karnataka minister and Congress party leader Priyank Kharge making an indirect attack on the attendance of the Prime Minister at the event. The comments have invited an angry reaction from the BJP, which has accused the Congress leader of disrespecting Indian culture and religion. Narendra Modi attended the event on Friday at a park situated just opposite the BJP office.The program had been organized on the birth anniversary of Deendayal Upadhyaya, the ideological founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh.PM Narendra Modi was sitting in the front row during the performance. He clapped with the religious performances and played a tambourine-like musical instrument with the recital of a bhajan of Lord Ram.
Priyank Kharge Targets PM Modi
In response to the Prime Minister's participation in the program, Priyank Kharge criticized him and referred to "Bhajan Clubbing." On X, the leader of Congress commented that while the Prime Minister found some time for "Bhajan Clubbing," yet could not find the time to answer the important questions about the Election Commission which Kharge raised.Kharge further accused the Prime Minister of dodging tough questions for years. The difference between the Prime Minister's participation in the celebration and the lack of accountability over political questions soon became a source of conflict between the Congress and BJP.
BJP Hits Back at Congress Leader
CR Kesavan, the BJP spokesperson, reacted very strongly against the comments made by Kharge. He charged the Congress leader of ridiculing the practice of bhajan and bhakti, which in his opinion, was insulting to the cultural tradition of India. Kesavan also directed his criticism at the Congress leader, Rahul Gandhi. He asked if Kharge would question the poor performance of the Congress in the election and the leadership of Rahul Gandhi. The BJP has raised the issue in the context of its cultural importance, whereas the criticism of Congress is on political grounds.
What Is Bhajan Clubbing?
The idea of Bhajan clubbing is a new way of performing devotional music whereby the devotees come together in a concert-like setup to sing, clap, and dance on devotional bhajans. In these events, there is usually a mix of devotional songs with contemporary music in an energized setting. This idea has drawn attention from the younger generation in various Indian cities as well as outside India. Unlike in the usual nightclub, in these events, the focus is on devotional music and the use of alcohol is not there. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken about this new trend and how it appeals to the younger generation. With his participation in this event held in Delhi, the idea has been given a political twist.
