Banks across India are closed on October 2 for Gandhi Jayanti 2026
New Delhi reports that banks across India will stay shut on Friday, October 2, 2026. This closure is in place for Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti, which is also called Gandhi Jayanti. The date follows the birth day of Mahatma Gandhi. Many offices mark it as a national holiday. The shut down affects public sector banks, private sector banks, cooperative banks, and regional rural banks too. Because of this, people may not be able to use branch counters on that day. That means routine tasks like cash deposits, cash withdrawals, account work, and submitting papers will not be available at branches. SBI, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and other major lenders have branch services covered under the holiday. So customers should plan any needed branch visit ahead of time. Gandhi Jayanti is among the three main national holidays in India. The other two are Republic Day on January 26 and Independence Day on August 15.
Digital Banking Services Still Work
Branch counters are shut for the time being. Even so, many online and self help options remain open. Internet banking is available. Mobile banking is also available during the same period in most cases. You can use ATMs for tasks that are allowed. This includes cash withdrawals and checking account balances. For paying and moving money, digital wallets and payment tools are still in use. UPI payments continue to work. IMPS is another option for eligible transactions. Please note one limit. If a service needs a visit to a branch in person, it will not run during the holiday. If you need something urgent that involves branch staff, forms, or other in person support, plan to finish it before the holiday or after it ends.
Bank Holidays in October 2026
October brings multiple bank holidays. Not every holiday is the same in every state. The Reserve Bank of India keeps a holiday list that mixes national dates with local ones tied to festivals and area events. In October, some places follow Mahalaya Amavasya on 10 October. Other regions mark Maha Saptami on 17 October. Banks may also shut during Dussehra and Durga Puja. The listed closure dates can include 19 October, 20 October, and 21 October. Which days apply depends on the state and the local schedule. There are also holidays around 22 October and 23 October in some areas. These are linked with Durga Puja or Dasain. Later in the month, more regional holidays appear. These include dates related to Laxmi Puja, Accession Day, and Maharishi Valmiki’s birthday on 26 October. Karva Chauth is shown as a bank holiday on 29 October in areas where it applies. On 31 October, banks are noted as closed in relevant locations for Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s birthday. One more point matters. These dates do not guarantee that branches across India close every time. The RBI list is based on state and location, so a branch’s closure depends on where it is.Second and Fourth Saturdays Are Bank Holidays
Banks in India stay shut on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays each month. This applies to both scheduled and non-scheduled banks. On the other hand, the 1st and 3rd Saturdays are usually open for work. If there is a 5th Saturday in that month, it is also typically a working day. Of course, this can change. A state holiday or a bank holiday may fall on those dates. So, if you plan to visit a branch in October, check what holiday covers your state and your branch. Even when branches are closed, many regular services can still be used through digital banking.
