The veteran Kannada actor will receive the prestigious award at the 72nd National Film Awards ceremony
Actor Anant Nag has been chosen for the coveted Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2024 for his contributions towards Indian cinema and his illustrious career in the industry. The selection for the same was announced by the Press Information Bureau on Wednesday. The award would be conferred upon Anant Nag during the function of 72nd National Film Awards on September 22, 2026 in Kevadia, Gujarat.
The Government of India has honoured the actor based on the recommendations of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award Selection Committee. While congratulating Anant Nag for this honour, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi also appreciated the contributions of the veteran actor towards Indian cinema, especially Kannada cinema, and his versatility in bringing out the best of different characters through his natural performances.
Born as Anant Nagarkatte on September 4, 1948, Anant Nag is an acclaimed name in the world of Kannada cinema. He has created for himself an illustrious body of work through several decades of his career in various languages and genres. During his illustrious career, Anant Nag has acted in over 300 films, including over 250 films in Kannada.
Anant Nag has not restricted himself just to films but has also performed successfully in television serials. He featured in the famous television series Malgudi Days which was based on the novels of renowned Indian novelist R.K. Narayan. Malgudi Days still continues to be a popular series amongst Indian television viewers and is yet another feather in the cap of Anant Nag's career.
Some of the awards won by this legendary actor include five Karnataka State Film Awards during his career in movies. In 2025, he was also conferred the Padma Bhushan award by the Government of India for his contribution in the film world.
The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is considered to be the highest award in India for the field of cinema. It is conferred on an individual who has shown excellent contribution towards the development of Indian cinema. The award is named after the pioneering person in the field of Indian cinema Dadasaheb Phalke.
As far as Anant Nag is concerned, receiving this award will be one more achievement in a career that spans many years. Anant Nag’s long association with Kannada cinema, as well as with films in various languages of India and even TV, has definitely made him a well-known personality in Indian entertainment industry.
On September 22, when the Dadasaheb Phalke Award ceremony takes place, Anant Nag will officially be recognized for his contribution to Indian cinema. It is also a tribute to the regional cinema and contributions of those artists who created long careers by acting.
