₹1 Crore Reward Maoist Misir Besra Arrested in Major Security Operation

Dreaded CPI (Maoist) Politburo member Misir Besra was arrested by security forces in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad district, marking a major breakthrough in anti-Naxal operations

Dhanbad: This is indeed a huge victory for the security agencies as the most wanted Maoist leader of Jharkhand, Misir Besra, has been arrested in a coordinated operation by Jharkhand Police along with the central security forces in Dhanbad district. Misir Besra, who is the senior CPI (Maoist) Politburo member, has been on the run with a bounty of more than ₹1 crore on his head for decades now.

The arrest has reportedly happened in the vicinity of Dhanbad–Giridih border area in the course of an intelligence-led operation. Besra had been under surveillance by the security agencies for some time now before the operation. It has been reported that Besra was arrested when he tried to evade the security operation in a forest area.

Misir Besra had been in the highest rank of the proscribed Communist Party of India (Maoist) and was wanted in many Maoist cases in Jharkhand and its neighboring states. He was a prominent name on the priority watch list of security agencies because of his involvement in organizing and coordinating extremist activities in the region.The amount of reward that had been offered for him by different state and central agencies had touched ₹1 crore, thereby showing his significance within the Maoist outfit.

According to official sources, the arrest made is among the most significant achievements of the government in its continuing fight against LWE. Security analysts hold the opinion that Besra's arrest can lead to a major weakening of the residual Maoist outfit in eastern India, as Besra is thought to be one of the last remaining leaders of the outfit who had succeeded in remaining underground in spite of several searches conducted over the years.

In view of his arrest, it is expected that security officials would carry out extensive interrogations in order to obtain vital intelligence about the organisational structure, functioning pattern, financing, and location of other active members of the Maoist outfit.

It was reported that more information about the operation, such as whether any other members of the Maoists were arrested in the process, would come up following the preliminary inquiry into the matter. This successful operation has been seen as a major success in the ongoing efforts of the security agencies to curtail Maoist activities and bring back peace to the region.
