The Vvaan moive Review: The fantasy thriller starring Sidharth Malhotra and Tamannaah Bhatia is a mix of mythology, horror, comedy, and the cultural context of Chhath Puja. Under the directorship of Deepak Kumar Mishra, it tries to craft a unique supernatural tale of India, featuring a sacred forest, Goddess, and a family in between all strange happenings. The movie features Sidharth Malhotra, Tamannaah Bhatia, Anup Soni, Sunil Grover, Shweta Tiwari and Maniesh Paul. Though the story idea seems promising, its execution loses momentum as the story moves ahead.
First Half Hooks You into Curiosity
The best thing about The Vvaan is the first half of the movie. The characters get introduced slowly and the presence of supernatural beings is built up. Transition from the urban settings of Mumbai to the village settings is effective. Mysterious forest in the film is one of the most intriguing aspects. The rules of that particular place along with the villagers’ superstitions give way to enough curiosity for the viewers to remain hooked. Cultural background in which the movie was made turns out to be an added advantage. Cultural linkage with Chhath Puja and mythology of India would have definitely given the movie an identity that distinguishes it from other horror movies.
The Second Half Falls Short
Unfortunately, however, the movie fails to retain the energy built up in the first half. The editing is not smooth anymore, and some subplots and explanations make the plot hard to understand. While Maniesh Paul’s comedic acts serve as a comic relief in the movie, the constant act of an old lady and a witch is overdone. While Maniesh Paul does have good comedic timing and dialogues, the comedy comes at points where the movie attempts to build up suspense. The climax of the movie is also unsatisfactory. Instead of giving a satisfactory payoff, the climax is noisy, filled with backstories, and explanations. There are many unanswered questions raised here instead of getting answers. While there are too many songs in the movie which disrupt the flow, the VFX of the movie are still average.
Performs well
Sidharth Malhotra does not disappoint in his performance but he has an easily recognizable character. Tamannaah Bhatia is responsible for the emotional part of the movie and does a fine job of showing Mamta’s desire to have children. Anup Soni and Shweta Tiwari are ideal choices for their roles and the choice of casting Sunil Grover as an antagonist gives the movie another angle to explore. Maniesh Paul is given some funny scenes and he performs well.
The Verdict
Vvaan review: The movie starts with an intriguing storyline – a horror fantasy movie with Indian mythology in the base of the story, Chhath Puja and legends. While the first half of the movie keeps one intrigued, the second half is packed with comedy, songs, back stories and explanations. The movie was meant to create an original supernatural world but it failed at doing that. The Vvaan is an inconsistent horror fantasy movie that starts with potential but ends up failing its promise.
