Sigma Moive Review: Jason Sanjay’s debut struggles with weak writing and uneven execution
Sigma Movie Review: All the necessary elements of a good heist thriller have been incorporated into Sigma - crime, action, humor, twists, and the typical over-the-top gangster atmosphere. Nonetheless, as presented in the Sigma Review, the film fails to transform them into an interesting viewing experience. Director of Sigma is Jason Sanjay, who is the son of Tamil cinema's superstar Vijay. The story is about Guru, played by Sundeep Kishan, a young boy trying to save his library, which has sentimental importance because it belonged to his deceased mother. He faces serious money issues until he comes across a skull shaped pen drive that exposes the criminal activities in a casino. This pen drive is accompanied by a key to the large vault owned by Veerayya Reddy, a gangster, played by Sampath Raj.
Bad Scripting Negatively Affects Sigma
An effective heist film needs meticulous planning, good character development and unexpected twists. Unluckily, such things are not present in the case of Sigma. The way Guru found the pen drive looks artificial, and at the same time many characters and developments come into play just because the script demands them. The script fails to create a reason why particular characters join the heist or why they take certain decisions. The second major problem is the team of Guru who add nothing to the plan but only ask for help themselves. They do not look like a necessary part of the heist but rather a comic element of the film. As for the romantic thread that includes Y and Sarangi, it is badly developed too.
Convenience Becomes Guru
The protagonist himself is plagued by inconsistent writing as well, where Guru was portrayed as a child who loved books but his knowledge never mattered in the story line. However, at some point in the movie, Guru suddenly demonstrates how he hacks, fights many people at once and faces hazardous conditions just like any good action hero would have done before. Instead of developing the skills of Guru, the script has introduced him whenever his skill is needed next.
Lack of Effective Action Sequences
However, there are some interesting action scenes in the film such as the fight at the parking garage and the confrontation at the fair ground. Unfortunately, the directorship and editing hinder both scenes to achieve the necessary tension. For instance, the fight in the parking garage should have been thrilling and claustrophobic but due to forced humor and poor editing, it fails to impress. Similarly, the fight at the fairground also suffers from a similar issue as there is too many number of people who have no goal in mind.
Performances Cannot Rescue the Movie
Most of the performances are satisfactory, with Sampath Raj looking like he’s having fun playing the gangster. Sundeep Kishan also seems lively in the part of Guru, but the actors are constrained due to poorly-developed characters. Though Jason Sanjay is ambitious for a first-time director, Sigma turns out to be an experiment rather than an effective heist movie. The movie had all the chances to become an exciting crime flick, but poor writing and execution stand in the way. Sigma Movie Review: The movie has a good concept and some nice ideas for action, but poor writing and directing ruin everything.
