Fees for Hema Malini: Hema Malini, veteran actress in Bollywood, has come forward to reveal the amount of fees that she has earned at the height of her career. In spite of her being one of the highest-paid actresses of her time, Hema Malini has turned down the description, claiming she did not earn huge fees like the stars of today earn. In a recent episode of Hindi Rush podcast, Hema Malini talked about her career in the 1970s and early 1980s and told that it was not her aim to earn money through movies.
Hema Malini Refutes Claim That She Was The Highest Paid Bollywood Actress
In response to the claim that she was the highest-paid actress of the Hindi film industry, Hema Malini refuted the term. She claimed that actors like her were not paid much in their days, and her earnings used to increase slowly due to her increasing fame. As per her statement, she was liked by the producers and directors in the movies and never insisted on taking a certain amount before accepting any movie. Hema Malini also drew a comparison between her remuneration and that of some stars in the present times. She claimed that she never took the type of “huge fees” that the stars take today and that the money paid to actors of her times was just a small portion of today’s industry.
“I Never Worked for Money”
Actress Hema Malini claimed that her attitude about working was simple. She never asked for any fixed amount and worked for whatever producers paid her. She remembered that she had never threatened any producer before, saying that she would work in their film only if they gave her some specific amount. As per the actress, her mother managed all monetary issues, and she was always accommodating towards the producers. According to Hema, if a producer said that they could not afford to give her any good money for a particular project, then her mother would understand the situation and make no claims. The actress also mentioned that she valued her experience gained from acting in various movies than the money she earned from them.
The Rise to Fame of Hema Malini
Hema Malini started her career as an actress in 1968 with the movie Sapno Ka Saudagar. Hema Malini emerged as one of the most iconic actresses of the Hindi film industry in the 1970s and 1980s. Some of her famous movies include Seeta Aur Geeta, Sholay, Dream Girl and Satte Pe Satta. Due to her performances and screen presence, she was titled “Dream Girl” of Bollywood. Through her associations with big directors and actors, she became one of the prominent stars of her era.
From Acting to Directing Movies and Politics
Later on in her career, Hema Malini also turned towards directing movies. In 1992, she directed and produced Dil Aashna Hai, featuring Divya Bharti and Shah Rukh Khan. In addition, she also directed and produced Mohini in 1995 with Madhoo and Sudesh Berry in the lead roles. Apart from her career in movies, Hema Malini is also known for her association with classical dance, especially Bharatanatyam. Moreover, she has also made movies for TV, along with continuing her occasional appearances in films. After acting, she also stepped into politics and served as a Member of Parliament.
The Legacy of Hema Malini
Padma Shri Award was conferred upon Hema Malini in the year 2000 for her contribution to Indian cinema. Besides this, she has also been recognized for her contribution to arts and received an honorary doctorate from Sir Padampat Singhania University in the year 2012. Her most recent statement gives an insight into how compensation and professional interactions were different in the times when Hindi cinema was emerging. Despite being linked to one of the most successful actresses of Bollywood, Hema Malini stated that her motivations as an actress went beyond her paycheck.
