IIT Bombay Student Suicide: Students protest after a second-year student dies following an exam-related incident
IIT Bombay Student Suicide: Protests erupted at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay campus as a result of the death of a second-year student from the Department of Energy Science and Engineering due to suicide caused by an examination-related episode. The suicide on Friday, September 18, prompted protests from students, with concerns being raised about the incident and its management by the institution. Sahil Wakode, whose name appeared in the media reports regarding the incident, was allegedly caught using a mobile phone during the examination conducted on the previous day. It was stated in a press release issued by IIT Bombay and cited by several news agencies that he had uploaded the examination question paper to ChatGPT while searching for answers to them.
IIT Bombay Stated That Student Got Counselling
As per the institute’s version, the issue was sorted out with the student through discussion between the concerned teacher and the head of the department. The student was counselled, and it was made clear to him that he won’t face any adverse consequences of the examination issue in his academics. The student came back to his hostel room after that. He was found dead soon after, and investigations are being conducted regarding his death. IIT Bombay stated its grief in this matter and said that it is providing support to all those who were affected by the incident. But there are other concerns raised by some of the protestors, who are protesting against the institute. There were some protestors, who said that the student was threatened with suspension and raised questions regarding the handling of the examination issue. It has been reported that the protestors have demanded an investigation into the death of the student. The allegations of the students are under investigation, but no disciplinary action has been taken in the issue.
Students Launch Protest at Institution
After the death of the student, there were reports that a number of students had assembled on the IIT Bombay campus, protesting against the institution administration. The protest persisted even when there were police personnel present in the campus. There was also displeasure amongst the students regarding the manner in which the administration had responded to the situation and the timing of the interaction between the two parties. It has been reported that an interaction was held with the IIT Bombay Director Professor Shireesh Kedare at the Convocation Hall, but a number of student community members remained unconvinced. The protests have shed light on issues relating to student welfare, stress in academics, mental health, and disciplinary actions.
Postponement of Mid-Semester Exams
The mid-semester examinations, which are currently taking place at IIT Bombay, are believed to have been postponed in the wake of the death of the student as well as protests that followed. The number of protesters was estimated at more than 400 students at one point. What exactly led to the death of the student is currently under investigation by the concerned authorities. Although the examination case took place prior to the death case on the same day, the reports available do not clearly indicate the cause of death. This case has therefore raised alarm bells among the IIT Bombay community members.
