DMK legislators refused the new government car offer, while Udhayanidhi Stalin questioned the state’s finances and demanded checks on MLAs’ assets

A row over cars by Tamil Nadu MLAs has led to a political debate after 59 MLAs of DMK rejected the offer of new cars made by the government for its legislature members. The Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin stated that the members of DMK will reject the offer made by the government based on the financial condition of the state government. He also expressed doubts about whether the resources of the government should be spent on giving cars to the MLAs who are financially well off. This topic was raised in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Friday where members from various political parties have debated over the Government Car Scheme.

Questions by Udhayanidhi Stalin Against Government Car Scheme

During the debate in the Assembly, Udhayanidhi Stalin remarked that the government should provide vehicles to legislators based on their financial standing. As per the given details, Stalin said that the government should first assess the financial status of MLAs before offering them vehicles from public money. Stalin also cited remarks by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, C. Joseph Vijay, about the economic condition of the state.According to Stalin, if the government was under financial strain, it was not wise to think of providing new vehicles to legislators.Stalin also raised doubts about the need to provide free government vehicles to legislators, who already owned cars and were financially strong enough.

Cars for MLAs by Tamil Nadu Government

The scheme of Cars for MLAs was announced by the Tamil Nadu Government on 19th August. The scheme envisaged providing every MLA with one brand new government car.The government scheme also envisaged the allotment of ₹75,000 per month towards the maintenance of the vehicle and the salary of the driver. This scheme instantly attracted the attention of the politicians who were questioning the expenditure on the scheme and whether every MLA needed a government car.

DMK MLAs Declare Refusal To Accept Cars

One of the reactions to the plan is that the 59 MLAs from DMK have refused to accept the new government cars.It was said to be an answer to the worries regarding government spending. According to the DMK members, public funds need to be spent carefully, especially when the state is having hard times financially. This issue has also brought up another debate – whether the government benefits for the elected representatives should be according to their personal needs or available to everyone.

Defence of the Proposal by the TVK Minister

TVK minister Aadhav Arjuna justified the proposal by the government during the debate in the Assembly. He stated that the Chief Minister treats all the legislators equally and that some of the MLAs might actually require the vehicle of the government.

It was mentioned by Arjuna that there were a few legislators belonging to the VCK and the Communist party who would not have the same amount of resources as other legislators. For those, it cannot be regarded as a luxury but rather an essential requirement. The policy of the government is to see that the legislators having the need for vehicles are provided with the same.

Cars Provided by the Government are Not a Requirement for Car Owners

From the position presented during the debate, members of parliament who owned personal cars did not have to necessarily apply for the government-provided car. This was presented to respond to the issue of unnecessary costs being incurred by legislators who were already able to get access to a car. Thus, the debate was no longer about giving each and every member of parliament a car but rather whether the Government Car Scheme was supposed to cater to those who really needed it.

Udhayanidhi Stalin is Taken to Task by Aadhav Arjuna

The car row also took a personal turn during the Assembly debate with Arjuna questioning Udhayanidhi Stalin about government accommodation. It is said that Arjuna had queried why Stalin lived in government accommodation although he had three bungalows. It was done with the intention of showing a contradiction between Stalin's opposition to government benefits and his use of facilities offered by the government. The car row has thus become more politicized with a clear difference in views between the government and the opposition on benefits.

New Dispute on Spending Arises in Tamil Nadu Politics

The row over government cars has emerged into a more general discussion regarding Tamil Nadu Politics, public spending, and utilization of government resources. As the government contends that some of the lawmakers require vehicles to carry out their duties, the opposition has raised questions over whether such facilities should be given to all lawmakers. Thus, it appears that the Tamil Nadu Government Car scheme will continue to be a controversial matter, especially at a time when there is an issue about the fiscal position of the state.
