New Delhi: Indian stock markets traded mixed on Tuesday as investors and traders adjusted to the newly introduced Closing Auction Session (CAS), a major change in the way closing prices are determined for certain stocks.

The benchmark indices moved in different directions during the session, reflecting increased market uncertainty and the impact of the new closing mechanism. The development came a day after the introduction of CAS triggered unusual volatility near the market close.

Nifty and Sensex Diverge

The Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex showed a notable divergence during Tuesday's trading session. The Nifty declined while the Sensex remained comparatively stronger, highlighting differences in the performance of stocks included in the two major indices.

According to Reuters, the Nifty 50 fell around 1.2% to 24,469.45, while the Sensex declined about 0.4% to 78,326.32. The volatility index also moved higher, indicating increased nervousness among market participants.

The market movement came after a sharp rise in the Nifty on Monday, when the index experienced an unusual surge near the closing bell following the introduction of the new auction mechanism. The sudden movement raised questions among traders about how the new system could influence index calculations and derivatives settlement.

What Is the New Closing Auction Session?

The Closing Auction Session is a new mechanism introduced under regulatory changes to determine closing prices for eligible stocks. The system was introduced by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) as part of efforts to improve the reliability and fairness of closing-price discovery.

Under the earlier system, closing prices were calculated using a volume-weighted average price (VWAP) based on trades during the final part of the regular trading session. The new auction-based system instead brings together buy and sell orders to determine an equilibrium closing price.

The CAS was introduced in a phased manner beginning August 3, 2026. SEBI's circular outlined the introduction of the new mechanism in the equity cash segment, while exchange-level operational guidelines were subsequently issued.

Traders Adjust to New Market Mechanism

The introduction of CAS has created a period of adjustment for traders, brokers and other market participants. The first few trading sessions have seen increased attention around price movements near the market close.

Market participants are particularly watching how the new system affects stocks that are part of the futures and options segment. Traders have also raised concerns about possible volatility around derivatives expiry and the impact of closing-price changes on settlement calculations.

The National Stock Exchange has clarified that the Nifty's value does not simply change suddenly at 3:30 p.m. Instead, the closing value is determined through the structured process associated with the new closing mechanism.

Why the Change Matters

Closing prices are important for investors, mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, derivatives contracts and other financial products. A reliable closing price helps market participants value portfolios and settle contracts accurately.

SEBI's move toward a closing auction is also intended to bring India's market structure closer to practices followed by several major global exchanges. Analysts expect some initial adjustment as traders become familiar with the new process.

Market Outlook

The coming trading sessions are likely to provide a clearer picture of how investors and traders adapt to the new closing mechanism. While the initial implementation has been accompanied by unusual market movements and some confusion, market participants are expected to gradually adjust their strategies.

The divergence between the Sensex and Nifty on Tuesday has also highlighted how changes in market composition and closing-price calculations can produce different outcomes across benchmark indices.

For investors, the immediate focus remains on market volatility, derivatives expiry and the practical impact of the new Closing Auction Session as the Indian stock market transitions to the new system.
