Bank Strike 2026: Public sector banks urge customers to use digital services ahead of the September 28-30 strike

Strike of Banks 2026: Customers of various public sector banks and also some old generation private sector banks have been advised to carry out essential banking activities beforehand because there is going to be a nationwide strike for three days starting from September 28 to September 30, 2026, called by the bank unions. Bank customers have also been asked to make use of ATM facility and internet banking facility. The effect of the planned strike will be felt mostly in branch-level banking activities. Government has also taken measures in order to lessen the effect by asking public sector banks and regional rural banks to run on Sunday, September 27.

Banks to Function Regularly on September 27

As the strike is planned just after the weekend, the customers may have to face several days of restricted bank services. To minimize the troubles, the public sector banks and the regional rural banks are requested to operate normally on Sunday, September 27. Customers have been intimated by Indian Bank and Canara Bank individually regarding the functioning of the banks on Sunday. The State Bank of India has also urged the customers to carry out their important banking activities before the date of strike. Customers have been requested to use the ATMs and ADWMs for their cash needs while making use of YONO, internet banking, mobile banking, UPI and other digital services for their regular banking needs.

Which Banks Will Be Impacted?

The strike will mainly impact public sector banks and regional rural banks as well as some of the old generation private sector banks. The non-participating private sector banks are expected to operate normally but the customer needs to be careful while choosing the bank for his transactions. The prominent public sector banks are SBI, Bank of Baroda, Punjab National Bank, Canara Bank, Union Bank of India, Bank of India, Indian Bank, Central Bank of India, Bank of Maharashtra, Indian Overseas Bank, UCO Bank and Punjab & Sind Bank.

Which Services Would Be Affected?

The greatest affect would be caused to those services that require a personal visit to a branch office or help from bank employees. People who have to submit papers, complete any transaction-related activities or other activities that require the help of the branch office must do so before September 28. UPI payments, mobile banking, internet banking and ATM transactions should continue to function normally, but people can check the advisory of their bank for more details regarding the service availability. Customers requiring cash could withdraw in advance since SBI has advised the use of ATMs and ADWMs.

Why Are Bank Employees Going on Strike?

The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has declared the three-day strike mainly due to the demand for implementing the five-day banking week system. According to the unions, they have around 90% representation of the bank’s workers. Other issues raised by the unions are in connection with the Performance Linked Incentive scheme and other worker-related issues. The government has asked the workers not to go for the strike and engage in dialogue. Difference in the stand of the unions and the government is there in respect of the five-day banking week system. UFBU has claimed that five-day banking week was agreed upon as part of March 2024 wage settlement, but according to sources in Finance Ministry, the ministry has not made such an agreement.

Why September 30 Holds Importance

The significance of the strike dates lies in the fact that September 30 marks the half-yearly closure of banks. It is noteworthy that the Finance Ministry has emphasized the significance of the particular date for functions like reconciliation, provision, and treasury and market activities. As far as the customers and businessmen are concerned, the best way forward would be to get all important things related to branches completed by September 28 and have digital banking alternatives ready at hand. According to the latest information as of today, the three-day strike will take place on September 28-30, 2026.
