External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will visit Russia on August 23-24 for talks on trade, investment, science and strategic cooperation
Jaishankar Russia Visit: It is reported that the External Affairs Minister of India, S. Jaishankar, would be undertaking a two-day official visit to Russia on August 23 and 24, and India-Russia trade, economy, science and technology would be one of the major issues to be discussed during his visit.Jaishankar is expected to chair the 27th meeting of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission for Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC). This is a significant forum to assess the economic relations and identify new avenues of cooperation between the two nations.The visit takes place amid a time when India and Russia are enhancing their strategic relationship along with expanding cooperation in various fields.
Meeting of Jaishankar with Russian Foreign Minister Looms
As per the information available through the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Jaishankar will visit Russia upon the invitation of Denis Manturov, who is the Russian First Deputy Prime Minister.Apart from the talks between Jaishankar and Manturov, the visit of the External Affairs Minister includes a meeting with the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. During this meeting, the two will share their perspectives on regional and global developments along with some issues concerning bilateral relationship.Earlier, Jaishankar had met Sergey Lavrov in July 2026 during ASEAN-related meetings in Manila.
Trade and Investment Are Some of the Issues under Discussion
Trade and investment are some of the issues that are going to be under discussion in the Russia trip by Jaishankar. It is known that both states have been trying to boost their economic engagement and enhance economic cooperation.There is the IRIGC-TEC that helps in analyzing the development in trade and economic cooperation between India and Russia. What Is the IRIGC-TEC?
The India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission is a crucial institution between the two nations. This commission keeps track of any development and progress made in areas related to trade and economic cooperation.This commission was set up by a treaty signed in May 1992 on trade, economic, scientific and technological cooperation.The first meeting of the IRIGC took place on September 13 and 14, 1994. In its wake, the commission has become one of the major institutions to review bilateral economic cooperation between India and Russia.The 26th meeting took place in Moscow on August 20, 2025, whereas the 25th meeting took place in New Delhi.
Platform for India-Russia Economic Relations
The IRIGC is chaired alternately by the Indian Minister for External Affairs and the Russian Deputy Prime Minister.In this context, the participation of Jaishankar in the 27th meeting of the IRIGC-TEC will be crucial for the future course of India-Russia economic relations.Given that trade and investment, energy, connectivity, science and technology are all major areas of focus, the visit to Russia is likely to offer an important chance to evaluate cooperation between India and Russia in the past and explore ways forward.
