orts is putting further pressure on US President Donald Trump to bolster America’s backing for Saudi Arabia amid missile and drone strikes by Iran-sponsored Houthi militants from neighboring Yemen on the Arabian Gulf country. According to the report, the strikes, which took place over the weekend on the main airport in Riyadh, led to the death of at least 16 people, one of whom is an American citizen, and the injury of close to 300 others. It has been termed as the most lethal attack on Saudi Arabia since decades, adding further pressure on Riyadh and its allies to act. The US is already providing intelligence and targeting services and aerial refueling services to Saudi Arabia. However, the White House has not directly engaged in any form of military offensive against Houthi militants in Yemen. Trump, over the weekend, indicated that he might join forces with Saudi Arabia to attack Houthi militants.

Military and Political Troubles for Trump

The growing problem occurs at a tough moment for President Trump and his Republican Party, which find themselves struggling with tough midterm election outlooks. The Iran war is part of the problem because the price of oil and concerns about the price of living in the US have risen. Further Houthi strikes against Saudi Arabia’s energy facilities and shipping lanes could drive up the prices, adding more economic and political pressure to the administration. “Saudi Arabia urgently needs help,” said Natasha Hall, an associate fellow in the Middle East programme of Chatham House, but Trump “also has to think about the upcoming midterms.” The White House did not immediately answer a request for comment about the issue. Trump has ignored fears of possible Russian and Chinese military assistance to Iran in a Truth Social post on Monday by saying it all happens at a very low level. Russia and China have had good relations with Iran, but they have not confirmed military assistance during the war.

Saudi Arabia Wants More Foreign Support

It has been reported that Saudi Arabia has become increasingly frustrated with the lack of support given by some of its Western allies. Riyadh is trying to gain further help from Washington and other regional partners and European nations in the face of the emerging Houthi threat. One possibility in this regard would be increased intelligence support from the United States as well as air support in the areas of Bab el-Mandeb Strait and Yemen. Another possibility that the kingdom can explore is getting more air defense interceptors as part of a strategy to counter any attack by missiles and drones. Nevertheless, Karen Young, a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute, had indicated that direct US offensive military intervention was highly unlikely prior to the American mid-term elections due to domestic opposition to another war in Yemen. In addition to working with the Yemeni government, Saudi Arabia is trying to get further support from its security partners.

Turkey and Pakistan Face Tough Choices

The situation has also made many wonder about the defence relations between Saudi Arabia and Turkey and Pakistan. While the two nations have expressed their readiness to offer protection, Turkey has refused to participate in any kind of offensive operation. At the same time, the governments of the region are worried about the vulnerability of Saudi air defences and the Houthi advances in Yemen. There is concern that the crisis might extend outside Saudi territory especially after Washington decided to resume its air strikes on Iran. The US has warned its citizens against using the King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh. The government employees need special clearance to use airports in Saudi Arabia.

New Threats to Red Sea Shipping Loom

Houthis attacks on Saudi Arabia's airports may have consequences for the kingdom as well as other regions if they intensify their attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The strategically important strait links the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and forms a critical channel for international shipping. Any disruption may lead to higher shipping costs and affect the supply chain. Ameneh Mehvar, an analyst at the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED), said that the increased presence of the US in the region may cause the Houthis to attack Red Sea shipping. Experts are divided regarding how to control the group. Although some experts support more military actions against them, some believe that diplomacy is essential to find a solution. Previous Saudi and US-led air campaigns to stop the Houthis' operations were unsuccessful as they could not set a long-lasting deterrent against them. With Riyadh threatening to retaliate and Washington contemplating what to do next, the coming weeks could be crucial for the region’s stability. Any military move will only add to the escalation process without offering any solution to the attacks.
