Donald Trump reportedly changed aircraft multiple times during a summit in Turkey after intelligence warnings about a possible threat, although the CIA reportedly viewed the information as low confidence.
US President Donald Trump, it is said, bounced between a few different aircraft during a recent summit in Turkey. This was after U.S. intelligence agencies got some information hinting at a possible risk to his safety. Trump later confirmed that he swapped planes during the trip, but fresh reports now say the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) didn’t really treat the claimed Iranian threat as all that believable. As The Washington Post reports, the worries about Trump’s security started to show up only after intelligence briefings suggested there might be a threat tied to Iranian proxies. Still, former American officials who were close to the situation claim the CIA looked at the material and decided it wasn’t, “not compelling enough” to lock in a genuine assassination threat. The story also says that Israel was behind the warning in the first place, and that it advised, in a quiet way, that Trump be taken off his aircraft. One former official added that Israel was concerned about a potential killing attempt, yet U.S. intelligence agencies held pretty modest confidence in the details they had been given.
Trump was at first spotted riding in the Boeing 747-8 plane gifted by Qatar, which people often call the new Air Force One. Later, he apparently moved over to an older Air Force One, then reportedly did this kind of quiet transfer to a smaller US Air Force C-32A aircraft. Not sure why they worded it that way, but officials said it happened. In the report, officials quoted said the intel was viewed as “Israel-derived, not US-generated” and because of that it got a lower confidence score inside the US intelligence community. They also said this judgment was passed along to people in Trump’s team. Even with all the questions about how believable the danger looked security officials still chose to add extra precautions. One US official said, essentially, that after earlier assassination attempts and other threats against Trump, the Secret Service did not want to take any chances. Trump, for his part, has admitted that he changed aircraft during the trip but he didn’t share what exactly the threat was. He said he just followed the recommendations from the Secret Service and the military officials assigned to protect him. The whole episode again underlines the heavy security around both current and former US presidents especially when intelligence agencies get reports of potential threats, even if those reports are assessed as less credible.
