Inauguration of National Sports Day 2026 has taken place in India on August 29th in memory of Major Dhyan Chand, who was one of the greatest hockey players India has ever produced. This day commemorates the birthday of Dhyan Chand, but at the same time, it is a good opportunity for Indians to motivate themselves to engage in physical activities and live a healthy life. National Sports Day started off as a day honoring one of the greatest Indian sportspersons and has now become a full-fledged campaign on sports and health.
Why is August 29 observed as National Sports Day?
August 29 is observed as National Sports Day because the day falls on the birthday of Major Dhyan Chand. Dhyan Chand, born on August 29, 1905, became one of the greatest hockey players of sporting history. He earned himself the title of "Wizard of Hockey" due to his extraordinary ball-control skills and goal-scoring abilities. Dhyan Chand was an integral part of the Indian hockey team that bagged the gold medal in the Olympic Games of 1928, 1932 and 1936. He also led India to victory in the 1936 Berlin Olympics with a scoreline of 8-1 against Germany in the finals. His efforts played an important role in making India a dominating presence in international hockey in the early twentieth century. Dhyan Chand joined the Indian Army in 1922 and started representing India internationally in the 1920s. He was conferred the Padma Bhushan in 1956.
History of National Sports Day
The first observance of National Sports Day in India was seen in 1995, which has gradually turned into an event that focuses on spreading the spirit of sports and fitness. With time, the day has become symbolic of celebrations related to athletes and events meant to motivate people to participate more in sports. The significance of the day grew even more in 2019 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Fit India Movement on National Sports Day. The movement's objective was to ensure that everyone leads a fit life by making fitness an essential part of their daily life. Competitions, physical exercise events and awareness programs are some of the events organized by schools, colleges, sports institutions and government agencies.
Major Dhyan Chand's legacy
Apart from his Olympic success, Dhyan Chand's legacy is also known for India's glorious period in the sport of hockey when India had won six Olympic gold medals in succession between 1928 and 1956. Another example of his legacy is the highest sports award in India which bears his name. It was named Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna in 2021 and previously, it was called Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award.
Is hockey the national sport of India?
A misconception held by many people is that hockey is the official national sport of India. However, the government has confirmed that no game has been officially declared India's "National Game". The reason for considering hockey as the national game of India is due to the nation's exceptional performance in the Olympics.
