Major Dhyan Chand is still one of the most celebrated figures in the history of Indian sports. He was born on August 29, 1905, and as a famous hockey player he is known for his outstanding skills, his excellent goal-scoring record and his role in establishing India's supremacy in international hockey. Major Dhyan Chand: Early Life and Army Career
Major Dhyan Chand was born on August 29, 1905, in Allahabad, which is now called Prayagraj in the state of Uttar Pradesh, and whilst he was serving in the Indian Army at the age of 16 he became connected with hockey. It was not at first known that he had a great interest in hockey, but his talent developed quickly and the sport later became the main feature of his life and career. He started his career in the military as a private and ultimately reached the rank of Major. Dhyan Chand took part in India's successful Olympic hockey expeditions. When India won its first Olympic hockey gold medal at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, Dhyan Chand played a key role. At the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics India succeeded in retaining its title and secured another gold medal, Dhyan Chand once again being a important member of the team. The highlight of his Olympic career was at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, when he was captain of the Indian hockey team. Dhyan Chand is remembered for his commitment to playing for India. But some of the details surrounding the alleged offer are hard to independently verify for historians. The story nevertheless remains a part of the legend that surrounds Dhyan Chand. He was so skilled that his opponents sometimes suspected there was something weird about his hockey stick. Dhyan Chand played as a centre-forward for India for many years.
