Kaverappa took four wickets while Rinku Singh scored a quick 60 on Day 1

The Duleep Trophy semifinal started with South Zone and Central Zone taking control on day one. North Zone and East Zone faced pressure early. South Zone bowled out North Zone for 195 at the BCCI Centre of Excellence. Vidwath Kaverappa led the attack and ended with four wickets for 66. Central Zone then put up 266 against East Zone. Rinku Singh made the biggest impact with an aggressive 60.

Kaverappa put the South Zone in the driver’s seat.

North Zone chose to bat first, but the start did not go well. They could not stitch together solid stands. Their opener, Qamran Iqbal, was the standout. He made 76 off 182 balls, hitting 10 fours and one six. Still, Qamran got some luck. At 16, Ricky Bhui dropped him in first slip. Not long after, a run-out chance was also missed before lunch. North Zone moved to 71 for one. Then they lost three fast wickets and slipped to 95 for four. One big turning point came when Abdul Samad was caught at slip. R. Smaran took the catch off leg-spinner Shreyas Gopal.

Qamran and Wadhawan take charge of the innings

Qamran Iqbal and captain Kanhaiya Wadhawan put North Zone back on track. They brought the total to 161 for four. But South Zone fought back later on. Left-arm spinner Tanay Thyagarajan struck first, dismissing Wadhawan. After that, Kaverappa worked through the lower middle order. Kaverappa made more changes in his second spell. He got rid of Nishant Sindhu, Abid Mushtaq, and Anshul Kamboj. Then he finished with four wickets by removing Qamran. Qamran tried a hook once he came down the pitch. The ball went straight to wicketkeeper N. Jagadeesan. North Zone were all out for 195 in the end.

South Zone lose two early wickets.

South Zone closed the first day on 40 for 2. Ricky Bhui went first, then Shaik Rasheed followed. Both wickets fell in a 16-ball span. South still has work to do once the next session starts. North Zone will come hard with pace when play resumes. Gurnoor Brar, Arshdeep Singh, and Anshul Kamboj lead that attack. South will need to handle it well. Karun Nair is not in South Zone's playing XI. Because of that, the rest of the batting group will face more pressure on day two. They will have to bat better to steady things.

Rinku Singh was the star as Central Zone won their game.

In the second semi final, the defending champions put up 266 runs versus East Zone. Rinku made 60 off 88 balls. He hit eight boundaries and his knock gave Central Zone a steady start. From later in the innings, the team still got support. Aryan Panday made 22 off 46 balls, and Yash Thakur finished not out with 30 off 26 balls. Rinku and the lower order put on a 45-run stand for the last wicket. With that, Central Zone reached 266.

Central Zone got ahead early.

Rinku made a half-century, and that mattered. Central Zone had to get runs across the innings. His intent kept the scoring going at a steady pace. Yash Thakur stayed not out on 30. He hit six fours in his 26 balls. Next, Central Zone will shift focus to its bowlers. It will try to hold the edge as East Zone’s innings continues.

Day 1 was theirs, from South and Central Zone.

On the first day of the Duleep Trophy semifinal matches, South and Central Zone both showed good form. Kaverappa took four wickets and kept North Zone to 195. Rinku Singh scored 60, and that innings pushed Central Zone to 266 against East Zone. Day 2 should be important. South Zone wants to build its edge early. Central Zone also wants to keep the pressure on East Zone. Since both games are still in the balance, what happens next could decide who gets nearer to the Duleep Trophy final.
