PM Modi met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the SCO Summit, discussing regional and bilateral issues
Ahead of their meeting, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian meet today (Monday) in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan during an SCO event. The meeting comes at a crucial time amid the geopolitical crossroads faced by West Asia. Both leaders are believed to have exchanged thoughts on their bilateral ties as well as the regional scenario. They discussed various avenues to establish peace in the region. Alongside Indian PM Narendra Modi and Iranian leader Masoud Pezeshkian, Foreign counterparts of other World super powers will join Russia President Vladimir Putin & China President Xi Jinping for this 26th SCO summit taking place from August 31st and Sept 1st in Bishkek.
PM Modi-Pezeshkian Meeting Draws Attention
At this crucial juncture when the political landscape of West Asia continues to change rapidly, the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Pezeshkian has attracted widespread attention. The leaders reiterated their commitment to enhancing the existing bilateral relations between the two countries as well as India’s continued support towards efforts aimed at achieving a lasting peace in the region. India and Iran have always enjoyed a unique set of relationships. Historical, strategic as well as geographical factors have ensured that there is tremendous scope for collaboration on multiple fronts ranging from trade and connectivity to energy and other regional issues. This meeting comes amidst rapidly evolving situations in West Asia. As the Prime Minister mentioned during his interactions with President Pezeshkian, “I reaffirm our consistent stand of supporting all efforts towards bringing about lasting peace in this part of the world.” They also discussed means of enhancing their longstanding relationship. Historically and strategically, India-Iran relations are very close. A number of areas can be highlighted from that perspective as well such as trade, connectivity, energy and various regional issues etc. Further, India was deeply involved in the developments related to Chabahar Port that remains an important port for India’s connectivity needs with Afghanistan & Central Asia. Post the meeting, PM Modi reiterated that India intends to ‘expand and diversify’ its trade basket with Iran.
PM Modi's Meeting With Putin Also Important
In addition to his meeting with the Iranian president, PM Modi will have talks with the Russian president, Vladimir Putin during this summit where among other things, the nature of India-Russia relations as well as economic cooperation and significant developments in both regional and global contexts would be on the agenda. Also PM Modi will be interacting with the Chinese President Xi Jinping at the summit. Given the significance of bilateral ties between the two nations and many unresolved strategic issues, anything that emerges out of any meeting between the two leaders will be keenly watched.
Indian Community Welcomes PM Modi in Bishkek
The Prime Minister also took an opportunity during his visit to meet members of the Indian Community as well as those associated with India. Members of academic and research communities including former ITEC students as well as yoga practitioners received him on this occasion. “During my meeting with the members of the Indian Community I have expressed my appreciation for their continued connection with India, and underlined the significance of people to people interactions in building stronger links with other Countries,” he said adding that “My engagement with members of the Indian community has also demonstrated the Cultural and Social dimensions of our relationship with Kyrgyzstan.”
