Rahul Gandhi Protest: Surprise Sit-In at Akashvani Bhawan Causes Unease in INDIA Bloc

Rahul Gandhi Protest: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi reportedly decided at the last moment to enter Akashvani Bhawan in central Delhi and sit there during an INDIA Bloc protest. Sources say the move made some opposition partners uneasy. Later, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra joined him at the All India Radio office. Even so, several alliance leaders reportedly said they were not told beforehand. Congress figures, speaking in private, said the plan to go to Akashvani Bhawan was made very quickly. They added that because it was rushed, they could not inform other allies in time. Some leaders also said the sudden shift raised doubts among partners and they felt sorry for how it played out.

How the Protest Happened

The INDIA Bloc MPs were on their way to Nirvachan Sadan, the Election Commission office. They were doing this as part of a protest. Earlier, the opposition MPs held a protest inside the Parliament area. After that, they left the complex and moved through the Parivahan Bhawan side. When the group passed the Reserve Bank of India building, police stopped them. Some opposition leaders then sat on the ground and began a dharna right there. Police took the protesters into custody. After that, they put them on buses and later moved them to the Parliament Street police station. Priyanka Gandhi was also seen getting on a bus along with the detained leaders at the start. Rahul Gandhi did not go with them. He went to Akashvani Bhawan first. Priyanka Gandhi later joined him there.

India Bloc allies raise doubts Tension grew inside the alliance after a report said Rahul Gandhi and Congress figures were holding a dharna at Akashvani Bhawan. The same report said other opposition leaders had been moved to a police station. The account added that calls were made between alliance partners. Trinamool Congress sent Derek O’Brien to Akashvani Bhawan. The Samajwadi Party sent Rampur MP Mohibbullah Nadvi. Some INDIA Bloc leaders reportedly felt the plan for a common protest had shifted. In their view, it became more of a Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi led show. They also questioned what the move was meant to achieve. Other leaders reportedly asked if it made sense to request a meeting with the Election Commission. They pointed out that the wider INDIA Bloc protest was aimed at the Election Commission and the Chief Election Commissioner.

Congress Defends the Surprise Strategy

Members of Congress defended the plan that caught people off guard. A few leaders said protests do not always follow a schedule. They added that surprise can make a protest hit harder. They also said it can keep officials from spotting every step ahead of time. Another point was made about timing. If an ally does not get the details right away, that ally can still choose to show up later. Leaders also brought up earlier cases. They mentioned events at the Prime Minister’s residence. They also referenced the Parliament Street police station. In both cases, they said alliance partners joined after the start.

Previous Protests Also Cited

Earlier rallies were mentioned too. Some lawmakers pointed to demonstrations in July. These rallies followed controversy over leaked documents and youth protests. They said the pressure from rallies led by Congress helped push the Education Minister to resign on July 25. Still, the Cockroach Janta Party says it deserves the main credit for what happened around those same rallies. These back and forth claims show a wider fight between opposition groups. Each side wants credit for bringing people out and for adding pressure on the government.

More unexpected protests could follow

Top Congress figures have said that surprise protests like the one led by Rahul Gandhi may keep happening. The party seems to think that not knowing what will come next can draw more eyes and help keep its political push going. Still, the protest at Akashvani Bhawan also showed friction inside the INDIA Bloc. Congress may like the idea of sudden action, but some partner groups want more back-and-forth before large shared events. Because of this, the opposition alliance may now talk more about how to coordinate, who should lead, and what steps should come first when planning the next round of protests.
