Raghav Chadha alleges political vendetta after his voter entry was marked “permanently shifted” in Punjab’s draft electoral roll

The Raghav Chadha Voter List issue has raised a new political controversy in Punjab as the name of the BJP Rajya Sabha MP appears to be left out of Punjab’s draft voters list. The status of his registration with the Election Commission seems to have been labeled as “permanently shifted”, making Chadha wonder how the labeling happened. Chadha does not seem to accept that the whole situation may be a mistake on the part of the administration or bureaucracy. He seems to see the act as one of political vendetta and wondered what the officials had done in verifying his voter entry. As per Chadha, he is an incumbent Rajya Sabha MP of Punjab and his voter identification is registered at Mohali. Additionally, he claims that he voted in Mohali for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. With all this in view, he wonders why his voter identification has been labeled as shifted in the draft electoral list.

Raghu Chadha says List is still only a Draft

The Raghav Chadha Electoral List is connected with the draft list, not the final list. Chadha mentioned that the draft list is not the final list and people get a chance to raise their claims or objections in the list. He mentioned that he is making use of the available legal process in the form of SIR (Special Intensive Revision) for restoration of his name in the list. The final list is going to be released by October 2026 according to the information in the dispute. Raghav Chadha has also expressed some concerns regarding the procedure adopted to include his name as “permanently shifted” in the list. He mentioned who was the person responsible for including him in such a category and whether there were any verification and processing done of this entry. He contended that the officials responsible for conducting electoral process were employees of the state government and therefore could be influenced through transfers and postings and such other career considerations.

AAP Denies Claims Made By Chadha

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) denied the claims and pointed out that the SIR process is conducted by the Election Commission and not the Punjab government. AAP contended that Chadha was residing in Delhi and said that maintaining or changing the voter registration was the responsibility of the individual voters themselves. In addition, the party accused him of trying to divert the blame for the problem to the AAP and Punjab government. According to the party, the Punjab government does not have the right to decide who should be in the list or who should be struck off the electoral roll. The conflicting statements have made the Punjab voter list issue yet another political controversy between Chadha and his erstwhile party.

SIR ‘Protected List’ Clause Mentioned by Chadha

Another clause mentioned by Chadha in the SIR guidelines released by the EC is clause 4(d). As per this clause, Chadha alleged that some categories of public personalities, which include MPs, MLAs, and judges, are put in a “protected list.” According to Chadha, this clause is there in order to give some extra time to these individuals in order to submit documents at the time of drafting of the electoral rolls. In other words, Chadha, being an MP from Punjab, should have been listed in this protected list even though his voting rights were suspended.

Political Aftermath Looms

The row is happening against the backdrop of ongoing political conflicts involving Chadha and AAP. According to Chadha, his relationship with the party leadership turned sour since he quit the AAP and joined the BJP. Additionally, according to Chadha, former AAP Members of Parliament who had moved to the BJP received threats from the Punjab government. Raghav Chadha Voter List Row is only another example of political vendetta, according to Chadha. On the other hand, AAP has denied the allegation and stated that the electoral list revision is in the purview of the Election Commission. The row will continue to have political ramifications in Punjab until the final list of voters is released. All that has been said on both sides will have to be judged based on the official records of electoral rolls and the result of the claims and objections process.
