CJP leaders Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das detained amid protests over voter roll revision

New Delhi: Leaders of Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) were arrested by Delhi Police early on Tuesday for entering the barricaded protest venue at Jantar Mantar and shouting slogans calling for resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar amidst the growing protests against the revised electoral rolls by the Election Commission. Abhijeet Dipke, CJP founder, uploaded videos on social media showing the party leaders Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das entering the restricted zone before they were arrested by the police. In the video clips, the protesters could be seen jumping over the police barricades while hoisting the national flag of India. Ranka and Das uploaded videos showing themselves entering the Jantar Mantar. Dipke tweeted on X that it was impossible for authorities to stop people from voicing their dissent while Das asserted that the protest site was reclaimed. It is not clear yet where the arrested leaders were taken by the police. Later, Ashutosh Ranka took to Instagram Live from the police bus along with other arrestees.

Jantar Mantar De-listed From Protest Sites

These detentions came one day after the Union Home Ministry informed the country that Jantar Mantar will no longer be a protest site. This historic site in Delhi is traditionally linked with various protests, political campaigns, and movements. There are other three alternative places that have been listed by the authorities where one can arrange protests on their permission. This move has been criticized by the CJP as they believe that depriving people of the opportunity to protest at Jantar Mantar will violate the right to peacefully assemble. Prior to the decision, members of the CJP had gone to Delhi Police seeking permission to organize a peaceful protest at the said site. They had also stated that they would plan further protests if there is no response to their demand. According to Ranka, Jantar Mantar was de-listed from the list of protest sites almost immediately after CJP approached the Delhi Police for the date to arrange their protest.

Concerns Related to Revising of Electoral Roll

The main issue of contention by the CJP is the revision process of the electoral roll carried out by the Election Commission of India through the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. The opposition party has accused the BJP government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to be benefiting from the revision process. The BJP and the Election Commission have denied any claims of wrongdoings in the process. The revision process is reported to have affected millions of people's names off electoral rolls, creating a situation where eligible people might be disenfranchised. According to critics, the process may have made the job of establishing citizenship even harder. The Election Commission has reiterated that all its decisions were unanimous. The issue became more public after an Indian Express report was made stating that Gyanesh Kumar did not consider issues raised by the other two election commissioners regarding the issue of voter enrollment.

Heavy Security Arrangements During Previous Protest Marches

These arrests have come after heavy security arrangements had been put in place in Delhi during a protest march organized by CJP on Saturday. Heavy deployment of police and paramilitary forces was done to stop protesters from reaching Jantar Mantar. Many metro stations were temporarily shut down due to the heavy security arrangements while trains had to be stopped. Many people were arrested during the weekends and later released, including some journalists. Videos and images shared on the internet seemed to show that some of the policemen had forcefully taken protesters to some buses, which included women. Opposition parties had conducted a march from Connaught Place to the Supreme Court in order to express their concern regarding the revision of electoral rolls.

Transformation into a Protest Movement

Initially, the Cockroach Janta Party was formed as a satire movement through social media after statements that were made by Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant during a court hearing in May. This movement was fueled by statements that likened unemployed youths to cockroaches. This party has since extended its operations to organizing protests about exam irregularity, educational reform, and employment. The earlier protest resulted in the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan as narrated by the movement. In the recent protests, the CJP has focused on electoral transparency and the election commission. The arrest of the movement’s leaders at the Jantar Mantar has brought in yet another episode of the brewing controversy surrounding voter list revisions. This conflict will undoubtedly continue being a major political issue as the opposition parties fight against the process.
