Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay announces the withdrawal of the proposed ₹27,000-crore Parandur airport project in the Assembly.
In a move to renege on plans for the development of a greenfield ₹27,000 crore airport at Parandur in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay informed the state Assembly on Monday. The move comes as a fulfillment of one of Vijay's very early and important political commitments in his career since joining politics. Plans for the development of the new airport had met with stiff opposition from people in the Ekanapuram area and surrounding villages due to fears of acquisition of houses and farmlands.
Parandur Became a Major Political Issue for Vijay
In the case of Vijay, however, the debate surrounding the construction of the airport at Parandur meant much more than just being about policy on infrastructure. On January 20, 2025, Vijay went to Ekanapuram and offered his support to the villagers who were against the proposed land acquisition. During the visit, he made a promise that the airport would not be built at Parandur. Thus, the recent announcement in the Assembly by Vijay is nothing but a fulfillment of a promise that helped him position himself politically.
₹27,000-Crore Project Faced Local Resistance
The proposed greenfield airport was meant to be constructed on an estimated area of 5,746 acres of land in the district of Kanchipuram. Nevertheless, for a number of years prior to the announcement, residents of Ekanapuram and other villages had been against the project because of its likely effect on their land and properties. This went ahead to make Parandur an issue of politics and social interest in Tamil Nadu.
A Significant Political Statement
There may be significant political ramifications from the decision of Vijay to drop the project in Parandur. This is because the Chief Minister has made the people aware that he would fulfill his campaign promises by implementing the decision on an issue that he had advocated prior to taking office. Nonetheless, the decision also raises the larger question of the needs of Chennai with regard to new airports. Indeed, the city faces growing needs in terms of passengers and air traffic, and so other avenues must be considered with respect to building airport capacity. In any event, for the time being, it seems that the Parandur project has come to its political conclusion.
