Flash floods in Nepal’s northern districts have caused widespread destruction, with hundreds of people reported missing and major infrastructure damaged.
New Delhi, August 26, 2026:Eight people have died due to an enormous flash flood which has done havoc in the northern parts of Nepal and hundreds of others are missing. The flash floods occurred in the Bhote Koshi River where the water has originated from the Tibetan side of the border and damaged the parts of Nepal such as Nuwakot, Dhading and Rasuwa.
According to the news provided by the Nepal Tourism Board, the number of missing tourists in the flash flooded area is 384. There have been 291 foreigners missing along with 93 Nepali citizens. Out of all the foreigners, 105 are Indian citizens, hence, this flash flood holds great significance for India in case of rescue operations. There were muddy torrents flowing down through the mountains and towns. There were some houses, bridges and roads damaged. People residing close to the river areas have been advised to move to a safer place.
Nepal Launches Large-Scale Rescue Operations
The Nepal Army has been using helicopters and disaster rescue workers in the disaster-hit areas to support their efforts in search and rescue and assessment of the damage caused. The Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force are other government organizations that are participating in the search for missing persons.According to the reports, at least 26 members of the Nepal Police are missing in Rasuwa district, while seven members of the Armed Police Force are also missing. Rescuers are having trouble reaching some of the locations as the roads and bridges have been swept away due to the strong currents of floodwater.An emergency meeting of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority has been called by Prime Minister Balendra Shah.
Hydropower Projects and Transport Infrastructure Hit
Flash floods have also resulted in extensive damage to the electricity network in Nepal. According to Nepal Electricity Authority, there have been serious damages to Rasuwagadhi, Chilime, Trishuli 3A, Trishuli 3B Hub 220 kV Substation, Trishuli Hydropower Station and Devighat Hydropower Station.Damage to electricity generating, transmitting and distributing infrastructure has led to interruptions in the provision of electricity in some parts of the region. In addition, several roads have been closed off, adding to the difficulties of carrying out rescue missions.Efforts are underway to gather information about casualties and damages. Due to the difficulty of accessing some areas, it is expected that the true extent of casualties and devastation will be known in the coming days.
