Sergey Brin’s renewed involvement and DeepMind’s reduced autonomy highlight Google’s push to make Gemini the centerpiece of its AI future.
Google has rolled out a big restructuring of its artificial intelligence division, and it looks like Alphabet the parent company is really going all in on strengthening its edge in this fast-moving AI race. The changes, which reduce the freedom of Google DeepMind more than before, sort of show the company is now more determined to turn advanced AI research into products that actually make money, mainly through its Gemini model. As Reuters reports, Google co-founder Sergey Brin has been taking a more hands on role in the company’s AI strategy during the last few months. He reportedly pushed important AI teams to lean hard on Gemini and speed up development, so Google can compete better with rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic. This latest reappearance of Brin in the process points to how urgent it is inside Alphabet to narrow the distance in the generative AI market, and not later.
A key aspect of the reshuffle is, uh, the leadership shake-up at Google DeepMind. This is the London based AI lab Google bought back in 2014. Demis Hassabis, who is co founder and CEO of DeepMind, has stepped down from his day-to-day role, to take on the jobs of Chairman and Chief Scientist at Alphabet. At the same time Koray Kavukcuoglu, the former Chief Technology Officer at DeepMind, got promoted into a wider leadership function. He now oversees Gemini development, along with AI operations. People are treating this whole thing as another piece of Google’s slow, gradual tightening of how DeepMind fits into its bigger corporate machine. Over time DeepMind moved from more or less autonomous research, to kind of being a central pillar in Google’s commercial AI plan. The newest changes, they centralize decisions even more, and they put extra weight on shipping products and pushing revenue, not just papers. Also, this shakeup is happening while Google has seen some very visible exits in its AI ecosystem. Jeff Dean, a long time Google AI leader, plus a number of senior researchers, have left to chase new ventures. That naturally brings up worries about keeping talent, and where the company’s research will go next. Still, Google says it is staying at the front of AI innovation. It claims heavy investment in infrastructure and compute power, plus continued work to expand Gemini’s capabilities.
