IIT Delhi Student Death: Police Launch Investigation

A 31-year-old M.Sc Physics student was found dead on the IIT Delhi campus, with police investigating the circumstances

IIT Delhi Student Death: A 31-year-old second year student of M.Sc Physics died at IIT Delhi Campus in Kishangarh on Saturday, 22nd August 2026. The local police has begun their investigations in the matter of student's death.According to the information available with the police, PCR was contacted at about 8:33 am by Kishangarh police station in connection with the matter related to the student at IIT Delhi Campus. Police were called to the spot where they took the student to the hospital of the institute and doctors there pronounced him dead.Circumstances of student's death have not been ascertained yet.

IIT Delhi Student Had Completed One Year of His M.Sc in Physics Course

The deceased was enrolled in a second year M.Sc Physics course in IIT Delhi and was 31 years of age. As per the preliminary information that is available to the investigators, the student had entered the campus of IIT Delhi at around 8 am on August 22.The police informed that thereafter the student had headed towards the Lecture Hall Complex. Investigators are looking into his movements within the campus as well as other information.

The Crime Team and FSL Team Were Called by the Police

After the incident occurred, the police invited the crime team and FSL team to examine the location.The teams examined the scene of the crime and gathered any evidence that could help in the investigation. The police are currently investigating the facts connected with the death and should provide a chronological order of events according to their forensic research and other sources of information.Additionally, investigators noted that there was no trace of any other injuries except for the injuries that occurred during the crime. The investigation process is going on, and the officials did not reach any final conclusion yet.

Taking Student’s Mobile Phone for Investigation

Police have seized the mobile phone of the student during their investigation process.The phone is expected to be examined following the required legal procedure to find out whether there is any significant information in it. The investigators are going through the student's activities prior to the incident and his communications in order to identify whether it holds any useful information.Information related to the case is also being gathered from IIT Delhi and elsewhere.

Student Belonged to Bihar

As per the information available, it has been confirmed that the student belongs to Bihar. It is said that he had been living outside the IIT Delhi premises with his mother while undergoing treatment.The student was also hospitalized at VIMHANS Hospital as per the information available. The police are investigating the information pertaining to his last days as a part of the investigation.Officials are also trying to gather information from the institution, which includes counseling records and other information pertaining to the circumstances leading to the student’s death.

Expressing Grief at IIT Delhi

The IIT Delhi expressed grief about the student’s unfortunate demise and condoled the family of the deceased.In its statement, the institute said that the loss of the life of M.Sc. student was untimely and tragic. According to the institute, the case is under investigation by the Delhi Police and the thoughts and prayers of the institute are with the grieving family.Moreover, the institute said that it would extend all possible support to the bereaved family.

Investigation Ongoing

The cause of death of the student is still under examination by the police. They are looking into the evidence gathered at the scene of crime, the mobile of the student, and information from IIT Delhi.Medical records and institution record, among others, may also be considered as part of the investigation.
