Zunheboto launches an HPV vaccination campaign for eligible 14-year-old girls to help protect against cervical cancer

The Medical Department Zunheboto is conducting an HPV vaccination campaign for the Promotion of the HPV protection for eligible girls against Human Papillomavirus (HPV) which is a leading cause of cervical cancer. The campaign has been notified through a circular issued by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, ZunhebotoThe program is designed for girls aged 14 with the beneficiaries being those who have already attained the age of 14 but are yet to reach the age of 15. The government program is expected to provide the vaccine to eligible beneficiaries without the cost usually associated with receiving the vaccine privately.

HPV vaccine to help prevent cervical cancer

HPV is a common virus infection and certain types of the virus can cause cervical cancer. Vaccination against HPV is considered as an important preventive measure against HPV-related diseases . As per the information shared by the Medical Department in the Zunheboto circular, HPV vaccination provides 93% to 100% protection against cervical cancer as per the circumstances and vaccine protection involved. Since its introduction in 2006, the vaccine has been used in more than 160 countries. Hence the campaign is aimed at creating awareness among the families and encouraging the eligible girls to avail the government vaccination program.

Who should get the HPV vaccine?

In Zunheboto, the immunisation drive is targeted only at the 14 years old girls. To qualify under the stated campaign criteria, a girl must be:

She was already fourteen years old.

Just 15 years old.

Proper age or identification verification documentation.

Parents and beneficiaries are also advised to check their eligibility with local health authorities before visiting the vaccination center.

Vaccination Documents

The eligible beneficiaries will have to carry Aadhaar Card or Birth Certificate while going for vaccination. These documents will help verify beneficiary’s identity and age. Having the proper documentation can help ensure the vaccination process goes smoothly. Families should also follow any further instructions issued by the local Medical Department on the date, location and arrangements for the vaccination.

Is the HPV vaccination safe?

“HPV vaccine has been used extensively and no impact has been reported on fertility or future pregnancies,” Zunheboto Medical Department circular says. The vaccine has been available through private hospitals in India for some years now. According to the information provided in the circular, more than 50 crore doses have been distributed, the circular said. Like any vaccination, eligible beneficiaries and their parents will be able to discuss eligibility, potential side effects and individual circumstances with healthcare professionals.

Government program can cut costs of vaccination

One of the key advantages of the campaign is that the eligible beneficiaries can avail of the HPV vaccine through the government program. The circular pointed out that when undertaken privately, HPV vaccination can be quite expensive with the price of a single dose quoted at around Rs 5,000. “Thus, the government campaign can provide the opportunity to get eligible girls vaccinated without the cost of the private market. Facilitating access to vaccination can be helpful in improving awareness and uptake, especially among families that might find the private cost hard to meet.

Why HPV shots matter

HPV can cause cervical cancer when the virus stays in the body for a long time. The risk is linked to high risk HPV types. Getting the vaccine at the age that is recommended helps lower the chance of infection. It does this by building protection before a person is exposed to HPV. This is a key step in preventing cervical cancer. In Zunheboto, the HPV vaccination drive is not only about giving out the vaccine. Staff also work with families so people can see why preventive health care is important. Parents with girls who are eligible are asked to talk with health workers and get clear facts. They should also make sure the girls bring the needed papers to the event.
