A Tribute to My Guru, Abbas Sir
It was September 2006 when I first met the man who would go on to shape my life and career—my Guru, my teacher, Mr. Abbas Jabalpurwala.
We first met during an interview at City Centre Mall in Salt Lake, Kolkata. At that time, Family Entertainment Centers were often dismissed as little more than local “video game parlours,” while Timezone was still establishing its presence in India. Under the visionary leadership of Mr. Sonaal and Abbas Sir, the company was determined to change that perception and build an entirely new experience for customers.
To be honest, I did not make it through that first interview. I was rejected.
Yet, at that stage, rejection hardly stayed on my mind. I was preparing for the biggest personal milestone of my life—marrying the love of my life, Priyanka. We got married on November 30, 2006.
Then came an unexpected twist of fate.
One chilly afternoon in Kolkata in mid-December, while I was on post-wedding leave, I walked into the iconic café The Cookie Jar for a quick bite. And there he was—Abbas Sir.
What began as a chance encounter soon turned into an impromptu conversation and, before I knew it, another interview.
This time, destiny was on my side.
I was selected as a Manager for the Timezone centre at City Centre Mall.
That moment marked the beginning of one of the most important chapters of my professional life.
In those early years, our team was helping build the Family Entertainment Center industry in India almost from the ground up. We constantly challenged ourselves to go beyond simply providing entertainment and instead create experiences and memories that guests would carry with them.
Through those years, Abbas Sir was much more than a leader. He was a true mentor.
He encouraged bold and unconventional ideas, gave me the freedom to execute them, and stood by me when things did not go as planned.
One piece of advice from him has stayed with me all these years:
“Making a mistake is not a crime, but repeating the same mistake is.”
Whenever I made a mistake, he stood in front of me and protected me. And whenever we succeeded, he gave me far more credit than I deserved.
The eight transformative years I spent under his guidance taught me lessons that went far beyond business. He taught me how to build experiences, lead people, take responsibility, learn from failure and, most importantly, believe in myself.
Everything I understand today about building experiences, leading teams and running my own venture, High Volt Bowling & Gaming, is rooted in the foundation he helped me build.
As we mark 20 years of this journey, I find myself reflecting on how profoundly his guidance has shaped my life.
After my parents, Abbas Sir is someone I hold in the highest regard.
