New Delhi: The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has accused the Centre of failing to honour commitments made to the group and warned that it could launch another nationwide protest similar to its earlier agitation at Jantar Mantar. The organisation has described the alleged failure to fulfil the assurances as “vishwasghat” (betrayal) against the country’s youth.
The CJP, which began as an online outfit before emerging as a pressure group, said it had called off its nationwide agitation on July 25 in good faith after receiving assurances from the government. However, the group now claims that several commitments remain unfulfilled or have not been formally communicated.
CJP Accuses Centre of Breaking Its Word
According to the group, one of the key issues concerns FIRs registered against students and protesters during the demonstrations. The CJP said the Supreme Court has sought a consolidated list of such cases so that the matter can be considered, but alleged that the Centre has not provided the required information.
The organisation has also raised concerns over commitments related to compensation for families of NEET-UG candidates who died by suicide following the examination controversy. It has alleged that the government has not clearly communicated what steps have been taken to implement the assurances.
The CJP has warned that any attempt to delay, dilute or reinterpret the commitments would amount to “vishwasghat” with the youth of India.
Fresh Protest Remains an Option
The group is scheduled to hold a meeting of its National Working Committee on August 24 to review the Centre's assurances and decide its next course of action. A fresh peaceful nationwide agitation remains one of the options under consideration.
The CJP has asked its students, young supporters and volunteers to remain prepared for the outcome of the meeting. The organisation has stressed that its earlier decision to withdraw the agitation was based on the government's commitments and should not be interpreted as weakness.
What Were the Earlier Assurances?
The CJP said the commitments made during discussions with the government included action on FIRs arising from the protests, assurances that students and peaceful protesters would not face punitive action in the future, and compensation for families affected by the NEET-UG controversy.
The group had ended its nationwide agitation on July 25 following the assurances. The protests had focused on examination irregularities and other issues concerning students and young people.
The latest warning could once again bring the CJP and the Centre into confrontation if the organisation concludes that the government's commitments have not been implemented.
For now, attention is on the August 24 National Working Committee meeting, where the CJP is expected to decide whether to continue negotiations or return to the streets with another nationwide protest.
