Vir Chakra awardee Abhinandan Varthaman has reportedly joined Goa-based regional airline FLY91 as a pilot
Abhinandan Varthaman: Another interesting piece of news is FLY91’s recent development where, reportedly, former Indian Air Force Group Captain and Vir Chakra awardee Abhinandan Varthaman FLY91 took the pilot role in the regional airline FLY91 that operates out of Goa. Sources say that Varthaman recently joined the airline in August and a whole new phase started for the well-known military pilot's flying career. Varthaman gained national fame due to the aerial battle between India and Pakistan back in 2019. In the process, he shot down a fighter jet of Pakistanis, but then his plane got knocked down too. After that, Varthaman was captured and held in Pakistan for three days after which he was released back into India. In recognition of Varthaman's deeds during the aerial engagement in 2019, in 2021 he received the Vir Chakra award. Vir Chakra is the third-highest wartime gallantry award in India.
Abhinandan Varthaman in New Position at FLY91
As per the sources, the new employment of Abhinandan Varthaman at FLY91 started from August. The ex-fighter pilot has joined as a commercial pilot for the regional airline. While asked regarding this news, the spokesperson of FLY91 neither confirmed nor denied the report of Varthaman joining the airline. It was stated by the spokesperson that employee data is personal information and thus cannot be commented upon. Therefore, specific information regarding his position, aircraft, and duties are not yet known. However, the latest development has certainly created quite some curiosity because of the exceptional profile of Varthaman as a fighter pilot.
The 2019 Aerial Engagement
The name of Varthaman came into wide recognition in India after the aerial battle between Indian and Pakistani aircrafts in February 2019. In this encounter, Varthaman managed to shoot down the enemy aircraft when he himself was attacked, forcing him to eject out of his MiG-21 Bison aircraft over Pakistan-occupied territory. He was detained for three days until Pakistan officially declared that they were releasing him back to India. The event made Varthaman a personification of valiance and professionalism, with videos of his detention becoming widely circulated.
Award of Vir Chakra
Abhinandan Varthaman’s valour shown in his dog fight was officially acknowledged with the awarding of the Vir Chakra in 2021.
The citation for this award appreciated his commendable sense of responsibility in the dog fight. This award made him one of the Indian armed forces personnel who showed valour in war operations. This transition of Abhinandan Varthaman from military pilot to commercial pilot thus marks an important stage in his career.
Expansion of the Regional Operations of FLY91
FLY91 is the name of the regional airline based in Goa that started its commercial operations in March 2024. The company presently operates a fleet of six aircraft, which are the ATR 72-600, as mentioned in the report. There are two base locations where the flights take off or land – one is at Goa, and the other one is at Hyderabad. The regional aviation operation of the airline consists of interconnecting smaller towns with the aviation services. Thus, the arrival of an experienced fighter pilot like Varthaman could bring a lot of aviation experience in the airline's pilot team.
Transition of a Fighter Pilot to a Civilian One
The move from fighter pilot to commercial pilot is noteworthy because even though there is no difference in the basics of flying, military and civil aviation have entirely different operational environments. A fighter pilot learns flying in the most stressful and challenging conditions, whereas a commercial pilot learns in a well-defined operational environment.
