Swiss Re enters India’s direct commercial insurance market with Bajaj General
Swiss Re will move into India’s direct commercial insurance business for the first time. Until now, the group has worked in India mainly as a reinsurer for more than 25 years. The company views India as a strong place to grow. It expects demand to rise as Indian firms expand at home and also take on work in other countries. Swiss Re’s entry is tied to a deal it announced in August with Bajaj General Insurance. The two firms plan to bring risk-management services and international insurance plans to Indian companies. At the start, they will focus on firms that are expanding into global markets. Ivan Gonzalez, who leads Swiss Re Corporate Solutions, said the chance in India is large. He put the worldwide commercial insurance market at about $80 billion. He also said India makes up less than 10 per cent of that total. Swiss Re wants a bigger role in the country as the economy keeps growing. Gonzalez added that insurance needs often track overall economic growth. He said the firm would like its India unit to reach about 10 per cent of its global portfolio over time. He linked that goal to India’s rising weight in the world economy.
Focus on Indian Companies Expanding Overseas
Swiss Re Corporate Solutions is one of Swiss Re’s main business units. Swiss Re has three units in total. Along with Corporate Solutions, the other two are property and casualty reinsurance, and life and health reinsurance. Corporate Solutions makes up about 20 percent of Swiss Re’s overall business. Gonzalez says Indian firms began their overseas push by looking mostly at export related markets. Over time, that approach has shifted. More manufacturing companies are now setting up plants and running operations abroad. Because of this shift, companies want insurance plans that work across several countries. These plans need to handle risks that come from different rules, different taxes, and different day to day ways of operating. In India, Swiss Re plans to focus on key areas such as property and energy, engineering and construction, and credit and surety. The firm also has a rollout plan by region. It intends to start with West Asia and Southeast Asia, then move to Europe. Beyond that, it expects sector specific openings in Africa, the US, and Canada.
Bajaj General Partnership
Bajaj General has formed a partnership with Bajaj General Insurance. The goal is to keep up with the rising risk-management needs of Indian firms. This applies to companies that operate in India and abroad. Bajaj General will use its local know-how. Swiss Re will add technical skill and support. That includes technology, capital, and insurance capacity. Together, the two sides plan to work on options for firms that face hard to manage risks. Gonzalez said Swiss Re intends to put a large amount of capital into India over time. He noted that the firm has not shared a specific figure. The plan will follow suitable openings as they appear. The deal is also meant to close a weak spot in India’s insurance market. Gonzalez said only a small number of Indian insurers can offer international insurance plans today. He explained that cross-border deals need knowledge across several areas. Those include taxes, rules, capital, and risk control across borders. Swiss Re has used similar partnership formats in other places. This includes Mexico and Brazil.
Changing Risk Landscape
Risk is shifting, and that is pushing demand for more specific insurance services. Firms now face risks that overlap. Supply problems can link to politics, energy price swings, and even the use of artificial intelligence. Swiss Re also thinks parametric insurance could find room in India. Gonzalez said take up is still small, in the low single digits. He added that it may rise to the higher single digits as time goes on. The insurer is also in talks about insurance plans that the Centre supports, in coordination with the government. A separate chance is tied to building data centres. These projects need big budgets, include valuable equipment, and use advanced systems. That mix can lead to the need for tailored cover. Swiss Re is moving into India’s direct commercial insurance space because risks for Indian firms are getting more complex. With Bajaj General, it plans to blend outside insurance know how with local market strength, as more Indian companies grow beyond their home base.
