SBI Data Leak: What Happened, What Information Was Exposed and How Customers Can Stay Safe

SBI Data Leak: The State Bank of India (SBI) is investigating a suspected data exposure after personal information linked to 3,897 customers was identified in a dataset found on the dark web. The incident has raised concerns about potential financial fraud, identity misuse and targeted scams involving bank customers. In a filing with stock exchanges on October 21, SBI said a preliminary examination of approximately 3.75 lakh records available on the dark web had identified 3,897 records containing personally identifiable information. The bank received alerts on October 16 from its Threat Intelligence Service Provider, the Defence Cyber Agency and the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In). SBI has activated its cyber incident response procedures and appointed an independent cybersecurity agency empanelled with CERT-In to investigate the matter. The bank said its core operations continue normally and that the incident has not materially affected its business or financial performance.

What Information Was Exposed in the SBI Data Leak?

According to SBI's preliminary findings, the identified records contain several categories of personal information, including:

However, the investigation is ongoing. SBI is examining the authenticity, completeness and origin of the information to determine how the exposure occurred and how extensive it may be. The identification of these records does not automatically mean that all affected customers' bank accounts have been accessed or that money has been stolen.

Does the SBI Data Leak Mean Your Bank Account Is Hacked?

Not necessarily. Exposure of personal information is different from unauthorised access to a bank account. The information identified in the dataset could potentially help fraudsters make their calls, messages or emails appear genuine. For example, a scammer who knows a customer's name, mobile number or loan-related information could impersonate a bank representative and claim there is a problem with an account or loan application. The fraudster might then ask the customer to share an OTP, PIN, password or other confidential information. SBI's preliminary findings do not establish that every affected customer's banking credentials, passwords, PINs or transaction details have been compromised. Customers should remain cautious without assuming that their accounts have been hacked.

How Could the Leaked Information Be Misused?

Sarthak Dubey, Co-founder and COO at Mitigata, told NDTV that customer information can pass through several systems beyond a bank's core banking infrastructure. Loan applications, KYC documents and account-opening forms may be stored across loan processing systems, employee email accounts, shared drives and third-party service providers. According to Dubey, possible sources of exposure in such incidents can include compromised employee or vendor credentials, phishing attacks, infostealer malware and incorrectly configured storage systems or application programming interfaces (APIs). However, these are general possibilities, not confirmed causes of the SBI incident. Investigators must establish whether the information originated from SBI's systems, a third-party provider or another source.

What Should SBI Account Holders Do?

Customers do not need to panic or automatically close their bank accounts. They should take practical precautions to reduce the risk of fraud.

  • Never share OTPs, PINs or passwords: Do not disclose confidential banking credentials, even to someone claiming to represent SBI.

  • Monitor bank transactions: Keep SMS and email alerts enabled and report unfamiliar transactions immediately.

  • Use official banking channels: Access SBI through its official website, app or verified customer-service channels. Avoid unknown links.

  • Check your credit report: Look for unfamiliar loans, credit cards or credit enquiries.

  • Secure Aadhaar biometrics: Consider locking biometrics through UIDAI's official channels if you do not need biometric authentication.

  • Report suspected cyber fraud: Call India's cybercrime helpline at 1930 or visit cybercrime.gov.in. Contact SBI through its official channels as well.

Customers should independently verify unexpected requests. A caller knowing personal details does not prove that the person is a genuine bank employee.

What Is SBI Doing About the Data Exposure?

SBI has appointed an independent cybersecurity agency to investigate the incident. The bank is working to establish the source and extent of the exposure and determine what remedial and preventive measures may be necessary. The investigation should help identify whether any internal systems or third-party platforms were involved and whether additional customer protection measures are required. SBI has stated that its core banking functions continue without disruption. Its investigation remains ongoing, and the full extent and origin of the exposure have yet to be established. For customers, the most important steps are to protect banking credentials, monitor account activity, verify suspicious communications and report potential fraud immediately. Even when personal information is exposed, timely precautions can help reduce the risk of that information being used for financial scams.
